Once upon a Time

Week Three: Service!
A 3-Part Rock Youth Mornings Series on the Parables of Jesus!
Take Home Idea: Helping someone else is like helping Jesus.
Main Verse: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” ().
and you came to visit me” ().
Supplemental Verses: ; ; ; ; ; ; ; 1
Purpose: Why are we teaching this? So teens would…
(1) Realize that serving others is like serving Jesus.
(2) Be encouraged to serve others even when the going gets tough.
(3) Choose one specific way they can serve their friends or family this week.

MESSAGE

Do you remember your life without Jesus? Maybe you do and maybe you don’t, but imagine a life without Jesus. Imagine living your life according to the way you want to live. Does it sound great? Maybe it does, and you can live a happy life living the way you want to live. But let’s change that, let’s flip the script if we can say that.
What if we showed you an eternity without Jesus. What if we showed you what Jesus has to say about the moment He parts us for heaven and hell.
Today let’s look at a parable Jesus says about...
Serving and the Final Judgement
Matthew 25:31–46 NLT
“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’ “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

So what does that mean about Serving and Sheep and Goats?

ONE// Serve

- In the verses we just read we read that if we serve a stranger we serve Jesus.
- Have you ever came across someone that was in need of help but you ignored them.
- Sometimes I come across random people pushing their cars on the freeway or stuck on the side of the road, if the Holy Spirit speaks to me to help then I help because that could be Jesus needing that help!

Two//Sheep

Matthew 25:32–33 NKJV
All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.
- What does it mean to be a Sheep?
- It means those that did what Jesus asked were sheep’s.
- When you finally given God all your heart and fully surrendered to Him you become a sheep.
- You start living according to what the Bible has to say.

Three//Goat

Matthew 25:41–43 NKJV
“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
- No, we are not talking about the abbreviation for GOAT (Greatest of All Time) – Unless we are talking about Jesus.
- The Goats represent those that disobeyed Jesus and did not follow His Word.
- They turned away from Him and did their own thing.
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NKJV
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
, ,
John 1:12–15 NKJV
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

Service.
Matthew 10:40–42 NKJV
“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
Ask the teens:
40 “Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me. 41 If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God,[m] you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs. 42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”
Ask the teens:
• Why do people come to this church?
• What types of thirsty people might be here?
• Are these the types of people Jesus might want us to help?
• How might we help these people?
