O King of the nations, the ruler they long for, the cornerstone uniting all people: Come and save us all whom You formed out of clay.
A few weeks ago we observed “Christ the King Sunday”.
We heard that Jesus’ Kingdom is not of this world.
We heard that He rules over three Kingdoms: The Kingdom of Power— the world; The Kingdom of Grace: The Church; and the Kingdom of glory, heaven.
Many confuse Jesus’ Kingdom with a Kingdom on earth.
The Jews wanted to hail Him as King for raising Lazarus and feeding the multitudes.
Millennialist Christians today expect Jesus to come and rule on the earth as a king for a thousand years before the Last Day occurs.
Many see Jesus today as a great religious king- someone who was connected to God and a great teacher.
But none of these will ever be a part of Jesus’ Kingdom.
When the text tells us that the nations long for a King, it really means they long for God and His Salvation.
Everyone wants a king.
Augustine put it this way: Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
The nations long for a King.
And Jesus is that King.
For only in Him are all people united on this crushing cornerstone.
