The Christmas Story
In Song…
We came today to celebrate the real meaning of Chrismas.
For many, the focus will be on the trimmings of Christmas shopping, decorating, cooking and the giving and receiving of gifts.
So we came this afternoon as a reminder that Christmas is about Chirst!
We in the houshold of faith love to think of Jesus Christ as a baby in a manger.
While the birth of Christ is a special and miraculous event, that’s not the whole story, the central truth of the Christmas story is this: the Child of Christmas is God with us!
Christmas is not just about the Savior's infancy; it is about His deity.
The humble birth of Jesus Christ was never intended to conceal the reality that God was being born into the world.
But the modern world's version of Christmas does just that.
And consequently for the greater part of humanity, Christmas has no legitimate meaning at all.
Thus Christmas has been reduced to Santa Claus, reindeer, and credit cards!
I wonder for a moment if we could once again turn our attention to what it means for God to be born in a manger.
How does one explain the Almighty stooping to become a tiny infant?
Our minds cannot begin to understand what was involved in God's becoming man.
Nor can anyone explain how God could become a baby.
Yet He did.
Without forsaking His divine nature or diminishing His deity, He was born into our world as a tiny infant.
He was fully human, with all the needs and emotions that are common to us all.
Yet He was also fully God--all wise and all powerful.
For nearly 2,000 years, debate has been raging about who Jesus really is.
Cults and skeptics have offered various explanations.
They'll say He is one of many gods, a created being, a high angel, a good teacher, a prophet, and so on.
The common thread of all such theories is that they make Jesus less than God.
But the biblical evidence is overwhelming that this child in the manger was the incarnation of God.
Isn’t it amazing how God used ordinary world events to fulfill His Plan of Salvation?
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
1. Go tell it on the mountain page 92 key of C
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
While shepherds kept their watching
Over silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens,
There shone a holy light:
Go, Tell It On The Mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Down in a lowly manger the humble
Christ was born, and brought us God's
Salvation that blessed Christmas morn'
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born…
Narrative:
You see it was this natural event that forced Joseph to go to Bethlehem, from Galilee out of Nazareth into Judea to the city of David…
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)[1]
2. O little town of Bethlehem #90 in the key of C
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight
For Christ is born of Mary
And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together
Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And Peace to men on earth
How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born to us today
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel…
