Matthew
God acts in mighty and unexpected ways as he directs history toward its goal.
He also uses human beings as the instruments of his grace and power.
We rightly respect those men and women who have served God well.
The emphasis, however, must be placed on what God does.
Christians do well to honor Mary as the mother of the Lord, but this should not exceed the bounds of propriety.
The New Testament shows that early Christians did not worship Mary in any sense, nor does she have a central place in subsequent events.
The major figure in the Gospel here and elsewhere is Jesus.
There can be no rival to him for the love, admiration, and obedience of his followers.
God acts in mighty and unexpected ways.
The coming of Christ was completely different from expected.
The work of the spirit of God in Luke is the same as the point of creation in Genesis.
- The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

We cannot fully comprehend the work of God
-
“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5  Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6  On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7  when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for Joy?

2. He uses human being as the instruments of his grace and power.
God uses both Mary and Joseph
His work through us can require untold suffering but also yields untold blessings.
-18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
- A faithful man will abound with blessings,
but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.
3. We should respect those men and women who have served God.
-We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.
Be at peace among yourselves.
4. Ultimately our respect should be focused on what God does.
