In the second week of advent look at how God promises the coming of “emmanuel” God with us. (luke)
btw i get emotional when sick or tired. so if i am more emotionary today…i dont want you country strong folks to throw in the towel on me.
Intro: when you dont think you need help.
Brook getting inthe truck.
Men, and my wife, asking for directions
LEON Mexico food poisoning wondering. Link asked…let me walk you back to the hotel at least. NO NO I can do it. Most miserable walk of my life.
ANy walk…any life where we think we dont need to depend on God will end up equally miserable.

From why me lord.
So help me Jesus I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus
My souls in your hands
thats an oldie. And i love it so. becuase of the turning point in the writers mind (Kris Kristofferson wrote that shortly after being born again.). He’s a “highwayman”. you think he’s got some memories he wish he could erase? some things he could undo? he meets jesus. he’s born again. and he writes this song…did you notice the turning point in this song?
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it so Help me Jesus I know what I am Now that I know that I've need you so Help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand.Biggest problem today may be no conviction of sin. If there’s no sin, there’s no need of a savior.
Biggest problem today may be no conviction of sin. If there’s no sin, there’s no need of a savior.
Turning point: Ive wasted it so, I know what i am. NOW THAT I KNOW that Ive needed you.
You ever forget just how much you need the Lord?
Or maybe you think you are beyond his reach.
In either case, their is a lack of dependence on god
Turn with me to Isaiah 7
Ahaz problem: he didn’t think he needed gods help. And whats interesting is…he was in DIRE STRAITS (what does that mean? haha) King of Judah…the south. with the North (Israel) plotting with the Syrians to TAKE HIM OUT. We need to do an old testament history class sometime.
Ahaz problem: he didn’t think he needed gods help.
God sends Isaiah to AHAZ to tell him DONT PANIC…TRUST ME.
Isaiah 7:4 ESV
And say to him, ‘Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah.
read 7:4
smoldering stumps. you take a coal out of the campfire…it can burn you for a while, but eventually it loses its heat.
thats the way our problems are. They are like smoldering stumps. Hot at the moment. but if we trust God we see the day they no longer have power over us.
Isaiah 7:5–9 NIV
Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying, “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “ ‘It will not take place, it will not happen, for the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is only Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son. If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.’ ”
Isaiah 5
If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.
Say it with me.
Say it with me.
This is a lesson about HOW THE PROMISE IS DELIVERED.
he’s expected to believe regardless of what he “sees”. He “SEE’S” enemies everywhere. and he wants to make a stupid alliance with assyria. He’s taking matters into his OWN hands because he is walking by sight.
HOW OFTEN do i do this. panicking in the face of challenge and tryting to solve it all through my own mind, strenght, will. all the while forgetting to trust God.
SIn is the prime example. I try to just “deal with it” that Im a sinner.
BUT I cant deal.
its crushing to me. because in my eyes, I am UNWORTHY of a relationship with God. For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of GOd.
BUT I ACCEPT BY FAITH THIS WONDERFUL THING…the forgiveness of God.
If you do not stand firm in your FAITH you will not stand at all.
2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
for we walk by faith, not by sight.
God wants AHAZ to trust him so desperately. Normally, he says, DONT TEST ME JUST TRUST ME.
But this time, HE OFFERS to give ahaz a sign.
Isaiah 7:10 ESV
Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz:
Isaiah 7:10–11 ESV
Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”
Isaiah 7:10-
What would you do if the lord offered you a sign? How would you react.
You mean you’ll PROVE TO ME That your there!?!?!? YES! Please do. thats not how men with hard hearts listen to god.
Matthew 16:4 ESV
An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
Luke 16:19–31 NIV
“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
People with hard hearts can see the sign of resurrection of Jesus and it wont be enough.
Same with AHAZ. he doesnt want the sign. can you imagine!
Isaiah 7:12 ESV
But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.”
God begs him, TRUST ME.
Isaiah 7:
He cloaks his pride with piety.
Isaiah 7:13 ESV
And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?
Isaiah 7:13–14 ESV
And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:13–14 ESV
And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:13–14a ESV
And he said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
“Im Going to
Im giving you one anyway! God says. because this blessing isnt just for you.
Isaiah 7:13-
Isaiah 7:13
not everything God gives us, is for us. In fact i think just about all the gifts god gives us are intended to magnify our ability to bless others.
When Emmanuel is born, AHAZ, these problems will dissappear.
Emmaneul
say it. Emmanuel.
You know what it means?
GOD WITH US.
Isaiah 8:9–10 NIV
Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us.
When God is with US, the enemy stands no chance. If only Ahaz would have heard and waited on the Lord. he wasnt interested.
Isaiah 9:2-7
Isaiah
Isaiah 9:2–7 NIV
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

2  The people who walked in darkness

have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

on them has light shone.

3  You have multiplied the nation;

you have increased its joy;

they rejoice before you

as with joy at the harvest,

as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

4  For the yoke of his burden,

and the staff for his shoulder,

the rod of his oppressor,

you have broken as on the day of Midian.

5  For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

and every garment rolled in blood

will be burned as fuel for the fire.

6  For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7  Of the increase of his government and of peace

there will be no end,

on the throne of David and over his kingdom,

to establish it and to uphold it

with justice and with righteousness

from this time forth and forevermore.

The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

He doesnt even want a sign because he is so sure of the situation.
God begs him, TRUST ME. but he wont
so the promise passed him by. it was for future trusters.
so the promise passed him by. it was for future trusters.
Isaiah 8:16 ESV
Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples.
Isaiah 9:2–7 ESV

SEALED UP…EXPLAIN
READ FROM THE LEATHER BiBLE
Let me say what Jesus says about this sealed up testimony. After reading from that very scroll, he says:
Luke 4:21 NIV
He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:
But do you hear? or are you more like AHAZ…going your own way. trying to make it on your own...
Emmanuel. God is with us.
Sometimes we feel like we are missing things. but that is when we are walking by sight. When we walk by faith in EMMANUEL, we lack nothing.
We long to experience the presence of God. Moses wanted it so badly.
WHen he first entered into God’s presence and was Given the charge to preach release for the captives in Egypt, he asks...
Exodus 3:11–12 NIV
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
Exodus 3:5–6 ESV
Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
Exodus 3:
Exodus 3:5 ESV
Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
Exodus 3:5-
Exodus 3:

Justified
IMMANUEL. God is with US.
That’s the promise of Christmas…that this child born so long ago brought about a chance for us to dwell with God, and as a result have NOTHING TO FEAR.
But if you do not stand firm in faith, you will not stand at all.
for we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith in Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Praise God
Invitation: just as I am new arrangement
Text: Summarize 7:1-5…read 8 and 9
God begs him, TRUST ME.
Wait on the Lord. Let this month be a month where we celebrate delivered promises, and promises YET to be delivered, because of who he is and because of his presence.
Christmas is a chance for us to stand firm in the faith. Because of who has arrived.
YEs its similar to AHAZ. we are waiting still.
Wait on the Lord. Let this month be a month where we celebrate delivered promises, and promises YET to be delivered, because of who he is and because of his presence.
