Introduction:

Scripture:

Mk 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

who will prepare your way,

3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness:

‘Prepare the way of the Lord,

make his paths straight,’ ”

4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.

7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Title: He is Lord

This time of the year is not about .....
Santa Clause
Gifts (Giving or receiving)
Christmas parties
Time off for school or work
This time of the year is about remembering the preparation that took place for the coming Messiah!
And celebrating his Birth.
And not just remembering the preparation and celebration that took place some 2000 years ago but ...
.... as for us today its about preparing and celebrating his return.
Though we spend a lot of time preparing for Christmas celebrations, we often neglect what it looks like to prepare our hearts and lives for Christ return.
like to prepare our hearts and lives for Christ.
It seems maybe an odd thing to us—this idea of preparing for Jesus—but that is exactly the call that John was declaring in the wilderness to the children of Israel.
for Jesus—but that is exactly the call that John was declaring in the wilderness to the children of
He was pointing the people away from himself and toward the coming of a Messiah.
Israel. He was pointing the people away from himself and toward the coming of a Messiah. He urged
He urged them to be ready, to make straight paths for him, because the Messiah would be coming soon.
them to be ready, to make straight paths for him, because the Messiah would be coming soon.
So church, this time of the year is truly about our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST!
Let me get more specific, its about proclaiming “He Is Lord!”
Its not about Santa .... Gifts ..... Parties .... time off!
Its about proclaiming “HE IS LORD.”
PAUSE
Segway:
We must remember, it was over 400 years of silence from God they had endured.
All of a sudden John the Baptist is on the scene.
JTB is very intentional .....
He is baptizing people
He is encouraging them to confess their sins
He is also very intentional in letting the people know who he was not ....
He was not the coming Messiah, (Lord)!
He said, the one coming who he (JTB) is not worthy to untie his sandals!
The one coming will baptize with the Holy Spirit
He (Jesus) Is Lord!
Body:
In this advent season ....
Last week we were reminded “He Is Coming.”
Not just the coming of the birth of the Messiah
But also the 2nd coming
It was all about the “Anticipation.”
You remember as a child, the anticipation of Christmas morning.
Having a hard time falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night and sneaking into the living room to see if He had come yet.
Not allowed to open the presents until your parents were up and present in the room.
It was all about the anticipation! (HE IS COMING!)
This week we are reminded “HE IS LORD.”
Mark starts his Good News (Gospel) with declaring and pointing to Jesus being LORD!
This week it’s all about the “Preparation.”
We see JTB as the one who is preparing the people for the coming Messiah.
He does this by proclaiming and baptizing
And just as JTB prepared the way for the coming Messiah ...
Today, we our to prepare as well for the 2nd coming.
This is what the church is all about, “Preparing for the 2nd coming.”
Climax:
There are a few things that’s revealed to us in this pericope in regards to “preparation.”
In preparation of the 2nd coming .....
It’s not about being prepared EXTERNALLY!
Illustration: in preparation to go out on a date or to an event you go through a sequence of events:
… get your hair cut
… you find out the dress requirements for the event
… buy a new outfit
… you find out what time the event is and make a grand entrance
Our Dress attire (Vs 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist...)
Its not about Looking like a Christian!
Our Position in Life (Vs 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.)
Not about your social class (Lower, middle, upper)
In preparation of the 2nd coming .....
2. Its about being prepared INTERNALLY!
I’m not talking about the food you are eating. (Did you read what JTB was eating)
(Vs 6b .... and ate locusts and wild honey.)
a. Confessing their sins - Salvation (Vs 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.)
b. Being Baptized with the Holy Spirit - Sanctification (Vs 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.)
Claiming Christ as “LORD,” there is one thing that is mandatory and one thing that is essential.
Confession/repent (Mandatory)
Baptized with the Holy Spirit (Essential)
to live a life with power/victory
to stay the course
to fulfil his purpose for our journey here on earth.
It is not a question of giving up sin, but of giving up my right to myself, my natural independence and self-assertiveness. This is where the battle has to be fought. - Oswald Chambers
It's not about standing up against sin but kneeling down to the cross. Not fighting against the devil but giving up to the Lord!
This is what it looks like when we are proclaiming “HE IS LORD” in our life!
PAUSE
In this preparation of the 2nd coming we are stating, “HE IS LORD.”
If he is Lord in our life then we have/are .....
Confessed (Confessing) our sins
(been) baptized by the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion:
So, as we journey though this Advent time of the year, let us remember ....
He is Coming!
AND He is Lord!
Pause
Let me ask you something this morning, ARE YOU PREPARED?
Have you Confessed your sins?
Have you sought to be baptized by the Holy Spirit?
I believe this would be a wonderful time in your life to Confess and be baptized.
For some of you it would be a wonderful way of remembering when you were saved and sanctified, Christmas 2017.
HE IS LORD ..... HE IS COMING AGAIN ..... are you prepared?
