this one was read—but refer to it
Psalm 8:17-19
Think about all that had transpired since the words of Isaiah and the Psalmist were written?
Approx.
800 years between these words and the time of Christ’s birth.
That to which we will speak this 1st Sunday of Advent:
In the time ISreal & Judah suffered through attacks, desctruction of the capital cities, and then exile.
What does a reprieve from suffering and a foreshadowing of the end of days have to do with advent you say?
Yet they returned and rebuilt, but by and large continued to be impacted by world powers—and had to deal with the silence of God, trying to survive, seemingly on their own.
800 years from our perspective:
These scriptures capture the essence of the need for hope and the hope that still cries out for final fulfillment

As you remain hopeful, keep awake.
you do no know when the time will come

What hope is their for communitis that have lost their way, their way of life, their coherence, their hope?
1)What is the ultimate Christian Hope?
8 Billion people, Youtube, Social Media, Facebook, Nano-technology, and the like
2) What hope is their for change, rescue, transformation, new possibilities within the present world?
Just like the Israelites were watchning and waiting for the Advent of Christ, for their hope to be fulfilled, we too begin a new year watching and waiting for the Hope of Christ’s return.
As long as we see hope in going to heaven, away from this world, then the two questions are unrelated.
Yet, we do not hope amiss, because today we begin to retell the story of God’s answer to our cries for help and forgiveness
But if we focus on a resurrection in the person of JC then can’t we hope for the resurrected one to bring life into our dying world?
Read the 2 passages in the NT
Live out the anticipation, the reality of the fruition of the 1st advent, th desire to be an agent of hope in God’s unfolding kingdom
=soverign rule, on earth as it is in heaven
-1st advent was a birth, the 2nd advent is a wedding (the son of God with His bride the church).

what we say about death and resurrection gives shape and color to everything else.
IF we are not careful we give merely an offer of “hope” that is no longer a surprse, no longer able to transform lives and communities in the present, no longer generated by the resurrection of JEsus himself and looking forward to the promised new heavens and new earth.
God’s new world of justice and joy, of hope for the whole world, was launched when Jesus came out of the empty tomb; He calls followers to live in him and by the power of the spirit and so to be a new creation people, here & now, bringing signs and symbols of the Kingdom to birth on earth as it is in heaven.
We are called to bring real and effective signs of God’s renewed creation to birth in the midst of the present age.
-when we don’t bring signs of renweal and birth with God’s creation, we collude with forces of sin and death

I invite you to consider ways and means to surprise others with the Hope of Christ.
