Promised Savior – 4000 BC
· Promised King – 700 BC
o Jesus was the king God’s people longed for
· Promised Priest – 400 BC
o Jesus was the perfect high priest who could intercede for us before God
· Promised Prophet - 1250 BC
o Jesus was more than just a prophet, he fulfilled them, he was the voice of God

15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”
17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”
21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
What is a prophet?
· One on whom God’s spirit rests:
· Speaks with authority
· Acts with authority
The promise was for:
· A divine representative

o 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

o One like us, an Israelite,

o 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
NT writers didn’t think of Jesus as a prophet…much more:
·
· Jesus the promise to fulfil the prophets.
· But Jesus fulfilled a prophetic function as one on whom God rests, spoke with authority, acted with righteousness and justice.
Everyone was waiting for the fulfiller of the prophecies…Jesus arrived. We could now easily move into waiting for Christ to return.
This isn’t a waiting game for us though….The church to continue the mission
§ We have a "prophetic" role as we proclaim the gospel to the world, and thereby bring God's saving Word to people.
§ God’s Holy Spirit resides in us
§ We are to speak truthfully about God to believers and unbelievers,
§ We are to be an example of righteousness and justice to the world.
We continue until Christ returns when these things can be done in fullness.
