Introduction
As we have been walking through the book of 1 Corinthians we have been discovering that ministry is messy. People are messy. The world is messy.
When a person finds Jesus through the gospel message. The verbiage changes.
Jesus washes you with the water of the word and makes you clean.
Isiah says “Though your sin be as scarlet, I will make you white as snow.”
You see, the power of the gospel is a resurrected life. A life once bound by sin is now yielded to God.
A changed life is the proof of the gospel.
When people come to the church searching for answers, it’s not to know how to sin. They have that down.
But how to live in love, joy, peace, longsuffering, genteelness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self control. They want the fruit of the Spirit. They want a true connection to God.
How to live reckless is not hard to find, but how to live righteously alludes most of us.
Righteousness comes through Discipline and Chastening.
The family of the Lord is no different. God as a good Father disciplines his children.
We use words like: crazy, insane, irresponsible, and unbelievable.
On the other hand, you have the family that is truly loved and disciplined.
We use words like: precious, polite, a joy to be around, and delightful.
So what’s the difference. Discipline and Chastening.
Hebrews 12:5–6 ESV
5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
Romans
Hebrews 12:11 ESV
11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Everybody wants the peaceful fruit of righteousness, but no one wants to endure the switch from its tree.

In , Paul is getting on to the church for not taking care of a sexual sin problem inside the Church.
1 Corinthians 5:1–2 ESV
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

The grace of God is not a pass on Sin.

Galatians 5:3 ESV

Galatians 5:13 ESV
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

There are 3 major sins that are mentioned in this passage: Sexual immorality, Greed, Idolatry.
These 3 sins have been the demise of to many ministers and ultimately churches in general.
If we are not willing to judge ourselves within the Church we are left to be judged by those outside the Church.
The world is not kind. It’s looking for any reason to disprove our changed lives in Christ.

God judges the World, We judge the Church.

There is a huge misconception in the world that the Church is not supposed to judge. Paul is very clear on how and why we must learn to Biblically hold one another accountable in the Church.
1 Corinthians 5:3–4 ESV
3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus,

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State’s president has told the football team that members must start conducting themselves appropriately after two players were charged with punching women.
President John Thrasher said in a statement that he met with the team Monday to reiterate that players’ actions must reflect well upon the university. He said a few players’ misconduct can damage its reputation.
Running back Dalvin Cook was suspended last week after he was charged with punching a woman outside a Tallahassee bar. Freshman quarterback De’Andre Johnson was kicked off the team after video showed him punching a woman in the face.
1 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 5:6 ESV
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
1 Corinthians 5:9–11 ESV
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
1 Cor 5:9
1 Corinthians 5:12–13 ESV
12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
1 Cor 5:12
Follow Jesus begins with a repentant heart.
Repentance has always been the call of salvation.
To accept Jesus is to walk away from sin.
If we allow these sins in the Church we cheapen the cross of Christ.

It’s time for a new lump!

1 Corinthians 5:6 ESV
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

The reputation of any church is only as good as it’s worst members.

If Florida State has some players feeding the hungry and giving clothes to the poor, but yet they have players punching women in the face and going to jail. Which story do you think is hitting the papers.
1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
1 Cor 5:7
For the gospel to have influence in this area we must repent of our sins and live righteously before God.
If a person is unrepentant of their sin we must protect the integrity of the gospel because lives hang in the balance.
1 Corinthians 5:8 ESV
8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Communion

This is the first time we will take communion together in this community.
If you care about the gospel being spread here, People coming to know Christ, Lives being changed, then we must purge out the old leaven of malice and evil and become a new lump before the Lord.
James 5:16 ESV
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:13 ESV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.
Take a moment and find a Church Leader around you and confess your sin and allow them to pray over you.
Then come to the tables here at the alter and celebrate communion with Christ.
First take the bread and remember that Jesus’ body was broken for you as you eat it.
Then take the wine. A symbol of the blood of Christ that cleanses you from all unrighteousness.
Once everyone has returned to their seats I will pray for us all.
