We must always be ready to forgive. Because we live in a world of stumbling blocks, We will have Inevitable opportunities to forgive. We also have the responsibility to aim to forgive when we are wronged and persist in that forgiveness even when the the offense is repeated.

Introduction:

Things that take you back: (after thanksgiving) Often times at thanksgiving, it is a time with family to go over memories of days past. This year I drove a truck from my 1st year driving.
There are positive ways to look back on former days…today, however, we are going to look into a command that Jesus gave, that, if not taken seriously, keeps people from experiencing healing from past wounds.
In the apostles mind, this is a command that was so great that they asked for increased faith.
Luke 17:1–4 HCSB
He said to His disciples, “Offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one they come through! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble. Be on your guard. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

Be ready to forgive

Luke 17:1-4
Forgiveness is hard… unforgiveness and bitterness is like picking at a wound that prevents it from healing. Healing can only occur once these things are let go of, but even at that, healing may take some time.
Detail what forgiveness is.
Forgiveness is a releasing of emotional guilt you place upon the other person. It’s a choice. It happens in the heart. It’s not a release of responsibility or an absence of healthy boundaries.
Why must I be ready to forgive?

My inevitable opportunity to forgive

My intrinsic obligation to forgive

Luke 17:3–4 HCSB
Be on your guard. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

It is an Obligation because it is COMMANDED

Notice that this command is applicable for EVERY ORDINARY BELIEVER. Yes it is supernatural (it takes faith), but it is ordinary (even the believer with the smallest faith can do it).
Forgiving one another is not just for SUPER CHRISTIANS. It doesn’t make you the bigger person, but an OBEDIENT person. When we forgive we are simply doing what is our duty. This is Jesus’ point in verses 7-10. He describes a obedient slave. He did his work in the field as he had been commanded. Jesus asks if he deserves some special thanks or recognition just because he did what he was supposed to do. The answer is no. He simply did his duty.
It is INTRINSIC to christianity, because the forgiveness received by God and the forgiveness offered to others go hand in hand.
Colossians 2:14 ESV
by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
My Sin oh the bliss of this glorious thought. My sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

Matthew 6:12 HCSB
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Mark 11:25 HCSB
And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing.
Mark 11:25–26 HCSB
And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing. [But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your wrongdoing.]”
Mark 11:25–26 HCSB

why does vertical and horizontal forgiveness go hand in hand?

Colossians 3:12–13 HCSB
Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.
Colossians 3:13 HCSB
accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.
Ephesians 4:32 HCSB
And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.

Jesus from the cross, “Father forgive them”
If someone says that they believe in Christ and yet they willingly harbor unforgiveness in their hearts, they are a walking contradiction.

Persist in forgiveness (v. 4)

But they don’t deserve it...
It’s the hardest thing to give away
And the last thing on your mind today
It always goes to those who don’t deserve
It’s the opposite of how you feel
When they pain they caused is just too real
Takes everything you have to say the word
