Let’s read this verse. So this is a verse that I’ve been thinking about a lot during the last week. I’ve had a notion about doing things for God and it can kind of be overwhelming because I fail. I try and do certain things for God and I get worn out. There are a lot of commands in Scripture that on my own I continue to fail. The other day, I was feeling discouraged because I can’t be good enough for what I want. My friends sent me a letter and it had this verse in it.
When growing older
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
It’s such a relief knowing that God is going to be the one who will instruct us and teach us and counsel us. It can be overwhelming when I need to make decisions. But God is saying that He will instruct and teach us in the way we should go; He will counsel us and has His eye upon us.
Verse 9 says, “Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.”
A horse bit goes inside of it’s mouth and is being controlled by where he rider is directing. The verse is saying not to be like a horse or mule. They don’t understand what is going on they just go where they are told to go. When it says to not be like a horse or a mule with a bit, I am picturing a horse that just follows it’s owner around. Or a big dog that is so well trained that it doesn’t need a leash. It stays right next to it’s owner.
I’ve been really encouraged by knowing that it is God who will teach me no matter what. But, this verse is saying to stay near to God and ‘follow Him around’.
