INTRODUCTION:
BECAUSE THIS IS THE WEEKEND WE RECOGNIZE VETERANS, WE’LL TAKE A SHORT DEPARTURE FROM OUR SERIES ON THE WARNING PASSAGES IN HEBREWS TO LOOK AT THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE SOLDIER AND THE CHRIST-FOLLOWER…
(ESV) – 3 SHARE IN SUFFERING AS A GOOD SOLDIER OF CHRIST JESUS. 4 NO SOLDIER GETS ENTANGLED IN CIVILIAN PURSUITS, SINCE HIS AIM IS TO PLEASE THE ONE WHO ENLISTED HIM.
STAND – READ – PRAY
I JUST WANT TO TAKE A FEW MINUTES THIS MORNING AND POINT OUT SOME OF THE SIMILILARITIES THAT EXIST BETWEEN THE SOLDIER AND THE CHRIST-FOLLOWER…
AND THIS PASSAGE, I BELIEVE, HIGHLIGHTS SOME SPECIFIC QUALITIES THAT DEFINE THE SOLDIER AND THE CHRISTIAN ALIKE, THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE NOT EVIDENT IN THIS PASSAGE THAT ALSO DESCRIBE BOTH…
WE THINK OF WORDS LIKE:
- DUTY
- HONOR
- ENDURANCE
- COMMITMENT
- SACRIFICE
ALL THESE WORDS, AND MANY MORE, ARE WORDS THAT OUTLINE THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE MEMBER OF THE ARMED FORCES, AND THE MEMBER OF THE BODY OF CHRIST…
BUT HERE IN 2 TIMOTHY, THERE ARE THREE WORDS THAT DEFINE BOTH THE VETERAN AND THE CHRISTIAN…
AND FOR OUR PURPOSES THIS MORNING, THE VETERAN EXEMPLIFIES WHAT THE BELIEVER SHOULD DEMONSTRATE…
SO LET’S LOOK AT THESE CHARACTERISTICS…
AND BEFORE WE GET INTO THESE THREE CHARACTERISTICS, LET ME GIVE YOU A BIT OF BACKGROUND RELATEDTO A WORD THAT IS USED IN THIS PASSAGE…
IT’S THE WORD SOLDIER…
EVEN THOUGH WE SEE THE WORD SOLDIER USED IN OUR TEXT TWICE…
THE TWO WORDS TRANSLATED “SOLDIER” ARE TWO VARIATIONS OF THE SAME ROOT WORD…
VERSE 2
4757. στρατιώτης stratiōtēs, strat-ee-o´-tace; from a presumed der. of the same as 4756; a camper-out, i.e. a (common) warrior (lit. or fig.):—soldier.
VERSE 3
4754. στρατεύομαι stratĕuŏmai, strat-yoo´-om-ahee; mid. from the base of 4756; to serve in a military campaign; fig. to execute the apostolate (with its arduous duties and functions), to contend with carnal inclinations:—soldier, (go to) war (-fare).
THE POINT IS THIS…
JUST LIKE OUR ARMED FORCES, WE ARE JUST COMMON MEN AND WOMEN CALLED TO SERVE IN A SPIRITUAL WAR AND TO OBEY THE COMMANDS OF CHRIST AS WE CARRY OUT OUR INDIVIDUAL AND CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITIES…
SO WHAT TERMS DESCRIBE THE SOLDIER AND THE CHRISTIAN???
THE FIRST ONE IS FOUND IN
1. CAMARADERIE
a. VERSE 3 – SHARE IN SUFFERING
b. THIS IDEA OF SHARING IN SUFFERING HELPS US TO IDENTIFY NOT ONLY WITH ONE ANOTHER, BUT ALSO WITH CHRIST HIMSELF.
c. BUT THE IDEA OF SHARING IN SUFFERING ALSO GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP BEAR ONE ANOTHERS BURDENS
d. SO WHEN WE SHARE IN SUFFERING, WE ARE CONSIDERED A “GOOD” SOLDIER OF CHRIST JESUS…
i. YOU SEE, PART OF WHAT MAKES US FAMILY IS THE EXPERIENCES WE SHARE…
ii. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES VETERANS A SPECIAL GROUP OF PEOPLE IS THE EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE SHARED…
2. MISSION
a. VERSE 4 – NO SOLDIER GETS ENTANGLED IN CIVILIAN PURSUITS…
i. THE ONE THING THAT DEFINES THE MILITARY MINDSET IS THE ATTENTION THAT IS PAID TO THE MISSION…
ii. MISSION IS ALL THAT MATTERS…
iii. WELL, THE SAME IS TRUE FOR BELIEVERS…
iv. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A MISSION, AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS SECONDARY TO THE MISSION…
v. THE CONCERN THAT I HAVE AS I LOOK AT THE MODERN CHURCH IS THE TENDENCY TO VIEW THE MISSION AS BEING OF SECONDARY IMPORTANCE…
vi. WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH?
vii. (ESV) – 19 GO THEREFORE AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, 20 TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. AND BEHOLD, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, TO THE END OF THE AGE.”
3. EXCELLENCE
a. VERSE 4 – SINCE HIS AIM IS TO PLEASE THE ONE WHO ENLISTED HIM…
i. THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT THAT WE HAVE THE FINEST MILITARY IN THE WORLD…
1. AND THEY ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM AT A VERY HIGH LEVEL ON EVERY MISSION THEY ARE GIVEN…
ii. BELIEVERS HAVE THE SAME EXPECTATIONS PLACED UPON THEM…
1. OUR COMMANDER, JESUS, EXPECTS OUR VERY BEST IN EVERY ASPECT OF CARRYING OUT THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH…
iii. SO, NO MATTER WHAT IT MAY BE, THE CALL IS TO DO EVERYTHING WITH EXCELLENCE
1. SO IF YOU ARE A NURSERY WORKER…
a. EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE A VOLUNTEER…
b. CHRIST EXPECTS THE VERY BEST YOU HAVE TO OFFER…
2. IF YOU HELP OPERATE THE SOUND AND VIDEO…
a. THE SAME EXPECTATION IS PLACED ON YOU...
3. (ESV) – 17 AND WHATEVER YOU DO, IN WORD OR DEED, DO EVERYTHING IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS, GIVING THANKS TO GOD THE FATHER THROUGH HIM.
CONCLUSION:
MAYBE THIS MORNING, GOD IS CALLING OUT TO YOU…
TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THE SAVED, AND TO ENTER INTO THE BATTLE FOR THE SOULS OF MEN…
THIS MORNING, I WANT TO INVITE YOU TO RESPOND IN ANY OF FOUR WAYS.
A CALL TO UNITE – MAYBE YOU ARE HERE THIS MORNING AND YOU SENSE IN YOUR SPIRIT THAT THE LORD WOULD HAVE YOU TO UNITE WITH THIS BODY OF BELIEVERS.
WE BELIEVE STRONGLY IN THE IMPORTANCE OF CHURCH MEMBERSHIP HERE AND WE ACCEPT MEMBERS THROUGH SALVATION AND BAPTISM, THROUGH TRANSFER OF LETTER FROM ANOTHER SOUTHERN BAPTIST CHURCH, OR THROUGH STATEMENT OF FAITH, PROVIDED YOU HAVE BEEN SCRIPTURALLY BAPTIZED.
MAYBE THIS MORNING, THIS IS WHAT GOD IS CALLING YOU TO DO. IF SO, I WANT TO INVITE YOU TO COME FORWARD DURING THE INVITATION.
A CALL TO SERVE – YOU MAY BE HERE AND YOU FEEL THAT GOD IS CALLING YOU TO A SPECIFIC PLACE OF SERVICE. WE WANT TO WALK THROUGH THIS DECISION WITH YOU AND CELEBRATE GOD’S MOVING IN YOUR LIFE.
IF THIS IS YOU, I WANT TO INVITE YOU TO COME FORWARD DURING THE INVITATION.
A CALL TO REPENT – OR YOU MAY BE HERE AND GOD HAS SPOKEN TO YOUR HEART, AND YOU KNOW YOU NEED TO RESPOND IN REPENTANCE AND RENEW YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
I WANT TO INVITE YOU TO COME FORWARD DURING THE INVITATION.
A GOSPEL CALL – YOU MAY BE HERE THIS MORNING AND YOU HAVE NEVER RECEIVED CHRIST BY FAITH AND COMMITTED YOUR LIFE TO HIM, THIS CALL IS FOR YOU.
CHRIST WENT TO THE CROSS AND TOOK YOUR SINS UPON HIMSELF SO THAT YOU MIGHT BE REDEEMED FROM THE PENALTY OF SIN AND RECONCILED TO GOD.
IF YOU NEED TO RESPOND TO GOD’S CALL TO BE SAVED, I WANT YOU TO COME FORWARD DURING THE INVITATION.
