You might be closer than you think to receiving the promise of God
I know longer get excited to see people start something but I have learned to be impressed to get excited when people will finish what they have started
God gives Joshua a message of promise for His people
Joshua 6:2 ESV
And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
Josh
I want to encourage you to see the promise as it is spoken to you from God
How do we know what God has promised us?
Joshua 1:5–9 ESV
No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
God will speak to you in a still small voice if we spend time to listen
the enemy will also speak to you so how can we tell the difference
Align it with Scripture
Check it with mature believers
Will it bring glory to God?
Learn to see what God has promised you and then go and get it
God told
Joshua 6:1–5 ESV
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”
I’ve been doing this long enough that I no longer get excited to see people start something but I have learned to be impressed when people will finish what they have started
I no longer get excited to see people start something but I have learned to be impressed to get excited when people will finish what they have started
Why do we stop short?
We lose sight
Promise started with Abraham
Moses carried it by leading the people out of slavery
now Jericho seems to be the next problem that is standing between God’s people and the Promise
there always seems to be a problem keeping us from the promises of God
situations that look impossible are not intimidating to God
Joshua 6:1–2 ESV
Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.
What do you do when God delivers a message of peace & joy but your life looks like everything but?
It looked like a p
Jericho was not a big city but it was well defended
High walls
sometimes to win the battle God’s way you have to be willing to do things that look ridiculous
look past what’s keeping you back and start looking into God’s promises
If you just see high walls you will never even start seeking God’s promises in your life
change perspective
stop looking at problems start looking to God
stop posting problems on FB & start honoring God
stop murmuring & complaining about how tough it is and start seeking God
spend the energy that we do complaining to make things right we may have more than we realized
we lose sight
2. I don’t automatically posses it because God promised it
when God called me to pastor a church
I was in my early 20s
had never read the Bible
and I had poor reading skills & even worse reading comprehension
never been to a Bible study
no understanding of ministry or how it worked
no public speaking skills
HS education that I took as a joke
literally living in a barn over 10 minutes from town
middle of no where
foggy day couldn’t see neighbors
God’s promise didn’t mean that someone called me that day and told me to come to their church to pastor it
walls were keeping me from it
Bible
education
Ways of the Master
online certificate
7 years at LU for a BS
No experience
started reaching the people in front of me
BS in our home from 2 to 25 to 2 nights a weeks with 50 people in our home a week reading and studying God’s word together
put me in a place to work with some amazing teenagers and opened doors for me to fulfill His call on my life for that season and to gain experience and knowledge
all the while still training horses
teaching horse clinics
public speaking skills
I remembered God’s promise and started trying to force it and found a position on my own even though all the signs said NO and many of the people in my life said no
in a short time it was clear that it was not where I was supposed to be
Shortly after Maggie got sick and we just stopped for a bit
seemed like the promise had drifted but about the time Maggie was finishing up treatment I got a call from BCC to fill in because we were without a pastor and the rest is history
There were many walls that tried to keep me out but I had to keep marching because my perspective of God remained larger than my view of the obstacles
some days this wasn’t the case and I would stop for a moment before I could pickup again —MAGGIE stare at walls
we lose sight

3. Progress isn’t always obvious
Joshua 6:3–5 ESV

promise to save her

If the moment that I prayed it came to pass
I would never stop praying driving running into cars
walking thru the mall bumping into people with my head down and eyes closed
sometimes I pray and I don’t see anything happen but He want’s to know if I will keep having faith even when I don’t see
This is for someone who’s progress isn’t obvious
keep walking
He may not show us yet so that we will be less focused on the outcome and more on obedience
God’s responsibility is the outcome
obedience is yours
listen to what Joshua told the people
Joshua 6:7–10 ESV
And he said to the people, “Go forward. March around the city and let the armed men pass on before the ark of the Lord.” And just as Joshua had commanded the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the Lord went forward, blowing the trumpets, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord following them. The armed men were walking before the priests who were blowing the trumpets, and the rear guard was walking after the ark, while the trumpets blew continually. But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
Josh 6:7-
Not to talk while marching
one complains they will all start to
in the instructions Joshua did not tell them how many days this was going on
Joshua 6:10 ESV
But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
no idea how this was going to play out
Josh 6:11
Joshua 6:11 ESV
So he caused the ark of the Lord to circle the city, going about it once. And they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp.
Leave for battle in the morning
come home and she asks how was it today?
maybe we are just scouting it out right now
Joshua 6:14 ESV
And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.
Joshua 6:12 ESV
Then Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.
by this point I’m sure the ladies are wandering if they are going to have a battle at all
with no clue how long
life doesn’t give us a count down
We feel like giving up because we don’t see
been around the walls 6 times
maybe if we didn’t have time to see how big the walls were we wouldn’t recognize how GOD did the work
we may start thinking it was our shout that did it but it was God who did it
legs are getting tired but keep on marching
act like every day is the last and one day you will be right
Josh 6:15
Joshua 6:15–17 ESV
On the seventh day they rose early, at the dawn of day, and marched around the city in the same manner seven times. It was only on that day that they marched around the city seven times. And at the seventh time, when the priests had blown the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city. And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.
Joshua
Joshua 6:20 ESV
So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city.
Give Him a shout of praise and receive the promise
