The Three P’s of Power

Intro

People have a love hate relationship around the concept of Power. On one hand we love the idea of having power accomplish or do a variety of things and on the other we view power as a source of control and corruption. we have been taught that power can be used for good or evil and let’s be real..who doesn't like a good superhero, who uses his or her power to defeat the evil mastermind.
Power - positional, personal, spiritual or other comes from God
But, seriously, whatever your view on power, power is necessary! And in all honestly we are drawn to power, because of this necessity.
r her power to over come an evil mastermind!
When the power goes off and we have a blackout
Daniel 2:21 NKJV
And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.
When the power goes off and we have a blackout we run around trying to find another power source! You look around for batteries ect, and in that moment it doesn't matter how cool your torch is, without power it is not going to work!
Power - positional, personal, spiritual or other comes from God
You can have a cool car with all the modifications to make it the best, but without power, it’s not going anywhere! In life, everything can be going well, but if you are powerless, you aren’t going anywhere either.
Actually one of the worst feelings you can have, is one of powerlessness…it stops you still.
For those in a position of leadership, power is essential.
So, whatever our view on power, it is essential to life, leadership, ministry, parenting etc.
Power - positional, personal, spiritual or other comes from God
In the Bible, there are four realms of power and authority.
For those in a position of leadership, power is essential.
Authority of a man in terms of being a husband.
authority of parents over their children. Third, God gives authority to the church. Elders or overseers have certain authority as they exercise their office in the arena of the church. Finally, there is the idea of human government. God uses and gives a measure of divinely ordained authority to human governments.
For those in a position of leadership, power is essential. Power is crucial to leadership. Without it, leaders can’t lead
Daniel 7:13–14 NKJV
“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.
Power is crucial to leadership. Without it, leaders can’t lead
Power - positional, personal or spiritual comes from God. He is a God of power! Power is not a foreign concept to God!
He sets people in places of authority, parents included and works in the realm of power.

The four P
It is essential to have a healthy concept of power.
Power is the ability to influence others
Whatever sphere we are in we all have a measure of power

Let’sPray

What are you doing with the power God has given you ?
Whatever sphere we are in we all have a measure of power
This morning we will look at the concept of power

The four P’s of Power

Let’sPray
Power = potential - electricity (constructive or destructive)
2. Power = provision - leadership, direction, protection, breakthrough, comfort = problems - what’s the use of power if there isn’t a problem to fix?
Power = provision - leadership, direction, protection, breakthrough, comfort = problems - what’s the use of power if there isn’t a problem to fix?

1. Power = potential

The definition of power is:
the ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way - ability, capacity, capability, potential, the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.
Power = provision - leadership, direction, protection, breakthrough, comfort = problems - what’s the use of power if there isn’t a problem to fix?
Electricity (constructive or destructive) Teenager and a high performance vehicle
Power is necessary to create, make a way, make decisions, move forward. In God’s design it is dynamic in bringing about freedom, reconciliation, healing and influence!
Without power, you can not enact change.
Power is
It has the potential to harm or do good, and this potential weighs heavy on the character of the person holding power.
2. the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events. "a political process that offers people power over their own lives"Electricity (constructive or destructive) Teenager and a high performance vehicle
Electricity has potential (constructive or destructive). Insulated it is safe, but left un-contained it is dangerous!
Because of it’s tremendous potential, power is to be handled with care!
Teenager and a high powered vehicle: Some states (Victoria, NSW, and Queensland) have introduced high-powered vehicle restrictions for Provisional drivers.  These restrictions limit young drivers from driving certain types of high-powered cars, such as those with eight or more cylinders, turbo charged or super charged engines

Power = provision

Power is never about being but doing. It shouldn't be about personal gain, title, position or fame. True power is about others and providing for their welfare. It’s about leadership, direction, protection, breakthrough, comfort.
True power & influence is rooted in serving. Follow Jesus’s example.
Leadership is a God concept
Luke 22:24–27 NKJV
Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

Great leaders use the power and influence they have to make things better for others. They realise that power is responsibility and not an entitlement.
Lords & subjects example.
Proverbs 3:27 NKJV
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
Power linked to character - Politicians who care more for power than policy & principle.
Proverbs 3:27 NKJV
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
2 Corinthians 4:7 NKJV
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
2 Corinthians
Corruption results when we lose sight of truth.

“The leader who exercises power with honour will work from the inside out, starting with himself.” Blaine Lee

God never gives positional and personal power as a means to gain personal advantage , but always as a trust to be stewarded for the benefit of others. People who misuse this trust by oppressing and misusing others to extend their own egos, will ultimately give an account to the One who gave them their power in the first place.

- King Nebuchadnezzer ‘s rise and fall from power, because of pride and abuse of power.

With power comes great responsibility and with responsibility comes problems.

4. Power = principle

Power is about upholding truth. Principle links with power to influence change in people and society.
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Leaders understand that truth is what we are fighting for. There is an in depth understanding and drive to utelise the power of truth to release power to change.
Corruption comes when we lose sight of truth.
Leaders overcome and break ground to gain authority - pave the way for others
Personal testimony
The quakers in the 1950’s coined the phrase “speaking truth to power” which in essence means to continually speak truth to empower those to action.
Faithful in little - faithful in much
“Speaking truth to power means believing deeply in what you say and fighting every day to have that heard. It may not be popular; it means taking a risk, it means standing for something.” Shari Runner
It’s the same with spiritual power!
Mark 16:15–18 NKJV
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:
Power linked to character - cares more for power than policy & principle
In Jesus instructed that the disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit had come upon them, power to be His witnesses.
POWER followed the preaching of truth! Faith is ignited when we stand for truth!
“Speaking truth to power means believing deeply in what you say and fighting every day to have that heard. It may not be popular; it means taking a risk, it means standing for something.” Shari Runner, Interim President & CEO, Chicago Urban League
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Conclusion

God has called us to be a people of power. To be the head and not the tail. In every sphere of society the church (the people, not the building!) is central to change.
Jesus understood the potential, provision and principle power
When we remember the 3 P’s of power, that power:
that power:
Has potential,
Is to provide,
and is grounded in principle,
our leadership will benefit (in whatever area we have influence)
