Introduction: looking to the future is difficult when you don’t learn from the past

- Israel has to face her inconsistency

Verse 2: God pronounces an indictment against Israel
Verse 3: Isreal is a usurper (Gen. 25:26)
Verse 4: Isreal is self-reliant, until after the fact (Gen 28:12)
Verse 6: God makes his expectations clear (Micah 6:8)
Repentance
Love
Justice
Worship

- Isreal denies the present problem

Verse 7: Unjust business practices (Pro. 11:1)
Verse 8: Hiding and denying sin
Verse 9: God predicts nomadic dwelling

- Israel has forgotten where they came from

Verse 10: God spoke repeatedly through prophets
Verse 11: Gilead (a land of fruitfulness) and Gilgal (where Joshua crossed the Jordan) are coming to to nothing (discuss irony of stone piles in Gilgal).
Verse 12: God knows Israel’s humble beginnings (,, )
Verse 13: God brought Israel through hard times ()
Verse 14: Israel’s sin will bear its fruit ()

- Idolatry is the root issue

Verse 1: Isreal turned to Baal (sex god)
Verse 2: Sin increases
Verse 2-3: Increased sin, increased consequences

- God reminds Isreal of their past

Verse 4: God is their only God
Verse 5: God knew Israel at their lowest point
Verse 6: Good times bred a bad heart in Israel ()
Verse 7-8: The holy God is a fearful thing to those in sin

- Israel has lived in foolishness

Verses 12-13: Israel’s foolishness is like a child turning in birth

- God proclaims resurrection

- God removes the facade from Israel

Verse 15: God uncovers a facade
Verse 16: War is the ultimate end of Israel (Assyrian conquest)
