God appointed Elisha to replace the prophet of Israel, Elijah – – and a series of miracles are recorded to confirm his position, including the healing of Naaman, the captain of the Syrian army – 5:1-14.

Leprosy was an incurable disease caused by a bacterium that resulted in permanent disfigurement until death and is contagious, so the Mosaic law required isolation –
Syrians considered themselves superior to the Jews, but knew they had no answer to leprosy – – so Naaman was willing to beg for help
Sin is a disease over which we have no power – – and causes isolation from God - – and we need help to overcome it –
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save,
or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
but your iniquities have made a separation
between you and your God,
and your sins have hidden his face from you
so that he does not hear.
Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.” ’

Naaman was insulted that Elisha did not honor him – – despite his desperation and humbleness, and he was unwilling to immerse himself in a different culture (muddy Jordan)
Baptism should be an act of humility, not aggrandizement – – if we consider the baptizer to be significant, we are putting an emphasis on the flesh, not the Spirit – – and the life of Christianity is a new culture to us – ;
True obedience requires humility – ; – and absolute obedience requires absolute humility – ;
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Naaman was not clean until he came up the seventh time – – not progressively cured, or on the road to recovery, but pure like a baby
There are no half-way measures to bring us to God – – and someone seeking to do the bare minimum to please God will never do so – ;
As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
And he said, “All is well. My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.’ ” And Naaman said, “Be pleased to accept two talents.” And he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them before Gehazi.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Concl: We can learn much about our salvation from this study of the healing of Naaman. Would you be cleansed of your sin today?
