The Path of a Disciple

It is a path where we learn to be strong followers of Jesus.

Our understanding grows as our relationship with God grows.

Hebrews 5:12–14 (ESV)

12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.

You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.

14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Disciple means ‘learner’, ‘student’

‘Disciple’ (mathētēs)

The name ‘disciples’ reminds us that the church from the beginning was the ‘school’ of Jesus.

The Sermon on the Mount

5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Jesus was always instructing his disciples and those who were not yet disciples

Therefore the teaching function must be very important in the church.

But the only real teacher is Jesus himself.

The church is basically a fellowship of his students.

A Disciple learns by (a) hearing his Master, and (b) doing like his Master

Our modern word ‘teacher’ is often associated with a person involved mainly in theoretical instruction.

But it may also imply practical training.

A teacher of a handicraft should have the skill to do the work in a way that the learner can imitate.

In the activity of Jesus as a teacher we find his disciples both learning by hearing and learning by doing.

By Matthew 10 we see Jesus Sending his closest disciples out.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

5 These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons.

You received without paying; give without pay.

9 Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food.

11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart.

12 As you enter the house, greet it.

13 And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.

15 Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

Discipleship = Imitation

Then we move to Acts 2. The disciples are gathered, the Holy Spirit comes, Peter teaches, People

41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:42–47 (ESV)

The Fellowship of the Believers

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.

45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people.

And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Disciples Make Other Disciples

2 Corinthians 5:18–20 (ESV)

18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.

We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:21–6:2 (ESV)

21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

6 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,

and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Being a Disciple means that we are growing into a NEW LIFE
