Our identity is an important issue.
Viking fan wearing a Packer jersey
Pastor in a bar
Identity plays an important part in our conduct
That is Peter’s point in the latter part of Chapter one.
You identity as a believer plays a vial part in determining your conduct in your everyday life.
Peter has already reminded these scattered Gentile believers of their new identity in Christ.
v. 1- strangers (I am not a part of this world’s system)
v. 2- elect (I am chosen by God)
v. 3- begotten again (I am born again by God’s mercy)
v. 3- lively hope (I have a living hope in Christ)
v. 4- inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading (I have an eternal inheritance in Christ)
v. 5- kept by the power of God (I am guarded by the power of God)
v. 7- might be found unto praise and honor and glory (I am being made unto praise and honor and glory for Christ)
v.8- rejoice with joy unspeakable (I have an infinite joy in Christ)
v.9- salvation of your souls (I am assured the salvation of my soul)
Now there are several reasons that Peter reminds us of our identity.
The first reason is so that we might be encouraged in our faith.
Believer be encouraged!
You are chosen by God and born again by His mercy, and guarded by His power.
You have a living hope in Christ, an eternal inheritance in Him, and an infinite joy!
The second reason is to challenge us in the area of our conduct.
Your identity plays a vial part in determining your conduct.
In what ways should your identity affect your conduct?
I.
We should be Hopeful
*13 Διὸ
Therefore,
girding up the loins of your mind
and being sober minded
set your hope fully (Imperative)
on the grace that is to be brought to you
at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
II.
We should be Holy
A. Our Conduct Described Negatively
As obedient children
not conforming yourselves
according to your former lusts in your ignorance,
As obedient children- primary way we display holiness is through obedience.
The illustration is as obedient children.
Parents how do you want your children to obey?
Because they love you.
Not a duty, but a desire
Not fashioning yourselves, not conforming yourselves
To the former lusts in your ignorance.
Your former lusts:
B. Our Conduct Described Positively
but
according as the One who called you is holy
you also be holy (Imperative)
in all moral conduct
For it has been written,
You shall be holy for I am holy.
One of the primary sources of God’s glory is when we as believers image or model him.
And here God tells us to be holy!
Why?
Because He is holy and we are to image Him!
Remember that our holy conduct comes out of our identity.
You are chosen by God, you are born again by His mercy, you are guaranteed an inheritance, you have obtained the salvation of your souls— so LIVE LIKE IT!
You are an image bearer of God, so live like it.
Be holy for He is holy.
Did your parents ever tell you before you left the house for the evening, son, daughter remember you last name tonight.
You remember that you are an Anderson.
Why?
You are an image bearer of the Anderson name and you better live up to that name.
Believer, You are an image bearer of God- that is your identity.
You are an image bearer of God, so live like it.
Be holy for He is holy.
Now I realize that nobody will actually be able to be holy as God is holy this side of heaven.
That is why Jesus Christ came to secure our redemption and to impart His holiness to us through faith in His blood.
But progressively we can become more and more holy.
I am not perfect, but praise God I am not what I used to be.
And by God’s grace I am not what I will be in the future.
That is the goal.
Conclusion:
So believer tonight I want to leave you with two thoughts:
Do you truly understand and believe your identity in Christ?
When I was not sure if Sharon and I would end up together, I had to repeat over and over again that I was under the control of a sovereign God and that if He wanted Sharon and I together then it would happen.
I had to repeat over and over again “God has a perfect will for me” until I believed it.
Do you believe, in your heart, your identity?
Is your identity determining your conduct?
Are you living a hopeful life in Christ?
Are you living a holy life imaging God?
Say this with me: “I am an image bearer of God” Are you living like it?
Believer, be holy as your God is holy.
