We started this series talking about how the Holy Spirit now indwells in the hearts of His people. No longer is God’s awesome presence confined on this earth. He has chosen to make all His people His sacred space.
Then we discussed how God has chosen to empower His people through the very same Spirit of God that indwells us. The same Spirit that empowered Jesus, the same Spirit that made the def man hear, the lame man walk, and the very same Spirit that brought life to the dead body of Jesus, dwells with in you and desires to empower you.
Last week, we discussed the motive of this empowerment. Why would the Holy Spirit choose to empower us? What we discovered was that the Spirit desires to manifest through us because God loves. The Spirit desires to empower our witness of Jesus because the Holy Spirit loves to bring glory to Jesus. The Holy Spirit desires to empower us to build one another up because the Holy Spirit is moved with compassion towards the hurting and broken.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today we are going to look at how the Spirit likes to manifest through us to show God’s love in the local church. If there is one key thing I want you to get it is this.

God desires to move through you in a supernatural way to build His Church!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let’s jump right into this today. Turn with me to

1 Corinthians 12:1–11 ESV
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The question Paul is answering in these first 11 verses is simply this.

HOW CAN I KNOW IF THESE SPIRIT ACTIVITIES ARE FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last two weeks I have had this question asked of me in one way or another. And it is an important question.
Over the years I have seen people fake the Holy Spirit and I have witnessed what I believe a few times to be supernatural experiences that were not from the Holy Spirit.
So, how can we know if what we experience is from the Holy Spirit?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul, gives us the test to determine where these spirit activities originate.

1 Corinthians 12:1–3 ESV
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

The Idols are mute but the Spirit of God speaks.

Paul’s expectation is that the Holy Spirit Speaks –
In other words Paul believes and experienced a God that was and is active amongst His people and the world through the Holy Spirit.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Holy Spirit will never curse Jesus.

The Holy Spirit will never speak negatively of Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will never exalt himself over Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will never lead you away from Jesus.

The Holy Spirit declares Jesus as Lord over all.

The Holy Spirit always exalts Jesus above all else.
You can not declare Jesus as master over all your life without the Holy Spirit.
John 14:26 NLT
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
A truly Charismatic congregation is not Spirit centered but Christ centered.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul then gives us three words to describe the activity of the Holy Spirit in the Church.

1 Corinthians 12:4–6 ESV
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
1. Gifts – Charisma- Grace, unmerited gifts.
2. Services – Diakonia – service, ministry
3. Activities – Energem – Power, works

God through the Holy Spirit graciously works through His people in powerful ways to minister to those in need.

The gift is given to the one in need by the Holy Spirit through a brother or sister of Christ.
You do not own these gifts –
they are manifestations of God’s love to and through the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. For the purpose, of building up, encouraging, and ministering love to His people.
Paul is clear, when the Holy Spirit manifest God’s power it is always to minister to those in need.
Look at verse 7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
God’s Holy Spirit will never be self exalting - Only Jesus exalting.
God’s Holy Spirit will never direct us to another - Only Jesus
God’s Holy Spirit will only manifests through His people so, we can minister love and help to one another.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Corinthians 12:8 ESV
For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raise your hand if you want a church that is ran and directed by human wisdom only?
Raise your hand if you want to see people faking the manifestations of the Holy Spirit?
Raise your hand if you want to be part of a church that allows false and lying spirits to manifest?
Now raise your hand if you want to be part of a Church, that is so centered on Jesus, that the Holy Spirit actively moves amongst us to heal the sick, give godly wisdom, manifest miracles, encourage us with prophetic words, and fills our hearts with the gift of faith to believe for the impossible?
The Holy Spirit will only exalt Jesus.
The Holy Spirit desires to move through each and all of us to give gifts to others that will minister to their needs.
The Holy Spirit desires to be an active part of our individual lives and to move powerfully amongst us.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next week is our Agape feast. - We will discuss the Spiritual gifts listed here and Romans and have a Q&A time during our meal.
We are taking our time on this topic because we want to be a church that is Biblical so we can see and participate in God’s awesome power.
