Jesus came to his hometown of Nazareth and was received without fanfare.
He entered the synagogue and preached.
Four different times the demons had recognized Jesus on site (; ; ; ), but the crowd was continually astonished at his words, wisdom and works (; ; ; ).
Now Jesus’ own family and friends do not recogize His true identity.

“…many who heard him were astonished, saying, ‘Where did this man get these things?’”
Jesus’ sermon gave the purpose of his mission and ministry.

They Were Astonished at His Wisdom
Jesus was wiser than the wisest man who ever lived.
42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.
(NKJV) “The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.”
They were astonished because they knew his upbringing.
They overlooked his true identity because they assumed that they already knew him.

When Jesus pointed out that they only looked for a sign and their unbelief they became hostile.
First, they belittled him.
They questioned his credentials; a carpenter, not a scholar.
They questioned his heritage.
According to Luke they tried to stop him by forcing him to the top of a hill and throwing him over.
Jesus was Amazed at their unbelief.

In contrast to the unbelief of his own kinsmen and country, Jesus was amazed at the belief of one person.
or
He recognized the source of Jesus’ authority, “I ALSO am a man under authority, having soldiers under me...”
He knew Jesus had authority to heal because He was sent from God.
