The future is Uncertain

God is in control, not us.

James said Come now. Modern terms would be “dude, really?”
We are not self-governed. There is a God that is greater than us and can propel us forward, or stop us in our tracks.
If thou dost not know this, thou hast not yet learned the first letter of the alphabet of wisdom
Spurgeon, C. H. (1892). God’s Will about the Future. In The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons (Vol. 38, p. 62). London: Passmore & Alabaster.
Proverbs 9:10 NASB95
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs

Plans made without God focus on our glory, not His.

“engage in business and make a profit.”
The folks in this passage are seeking only money for themselves. If they accomplish their goal, they will pound the chest and say look what I did. And for what? Money, that in an instant could be gone, or stolen or near worthless.
Hyperinflation: In May 2008 the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issued banknotes worth 500 million ZWD, which were worth less than 3 bucks in U.S. Dollars.
Probably the worst thing that can happen when we make plans without God is that those plans succeed.
Matthew 6:19–21 NASB95
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19–20 NASB95
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

Genesis 3:17–19 NASB95
Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
Genesis 3:17-

When we focus on God

You ought to say, If the Lord wills.
Lord willing and the creek don’t rise
When we focus on God’s will, then when our plans don’t turn out the way we want to, we can trust that God has our best interest in mind.
Romans 8:28 NASB95
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Colonel Whittlesey: A British division commander in WWI commanded everyone of his troops to read or recite the 91st Psalm every day. In all the years he commanded not a single soldier under his command was killed, despite fighting along side other regiments that were completely decimated.
Psalm 91 NASB95
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, My God, in whom I trust!” For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper And from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark. You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day; Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon. A thousand may fall at your side And ten thousand at your right hand, But it shall not approach you. You will only look on with your eyes And see the recompense of the wicked. For you have made the Lord, my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place. No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent. For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, That you do not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and cobra, The young lion and the serpent you will trample down. “Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. “He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. “With a long life I will satisfy him And let him see My salvation.”
