Who is Satan

We learned a little bit about Satan last week, knowing that that he was the serpent in the garden (). But onward from that knowledge what do we really know about him. Our general knowledge give that he hates God, that he is an enemy of God, that he is trying to destroy us, and that one day in the end Satan loses his battle against God!

Where Did He Come From

Satan’s name wasn’t Satan all the time. His name was Lucifer according to . He was later renamed in scripture as Satan or the Devil, both names meaning adversary. Christ gives that he fell from heaven ()
18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
So Satan comes from heaven! How in the world does an extremely evil being like Satan come from heaven? Why would God ever allow him to be there. To tell you the truth this is where is originated you see…

What Did He Do

Satan’s name wasn’t Satan all the time. His name was Lucifer according to . He was later renamed in scripture as Satan or the Devil, both names meaning adversary. Lucifer’s name meant light-bringer, morning star, or day star. says
12  “How you are fallen from heaven,
O Day Star, son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
you who laid the nations low!
13  You said in your heart,
‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
in the far reaches of the north;
14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.’
15  But you are brought down to Sheol,
to the far reaches of the pit.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
In - it says,
“7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
say,
“You were the signet of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13  You were in Eden, the garden of God;
every precious stone was your covering,
sardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
On the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14  You were an anointed guardian cherub.
I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15  You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16  In the abundance of your trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,
and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17  Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
What scripture is basically telling us is that Satan aka Lucifer was a beautiful angel. He was made perfect! However, looking at himself he became conceited and thought maybe he could become like God, maybe he could make himself a ruler of the universe! Satan wanted to be God, or just as powerful. So he went to get a throne just as powerful as God’s! He wared in heaven for the throne, for the authority, for the power and do you know what he got? He was cast out of heaven and earth became his new home. And ever since that time he has has been here on this earth with us, not in hell. Scripture does give that this will be his end “the lake of fire” but not that he is living there now. So what was Satan/Lucifer’s down fall? Well its this little thing called pride/arrogance! tells us…
18  Pride goes before destruction,
and a haughty spirit before a fall.
So my point is that Satan/Lucifer was like ooh baby I’m freaking gorgeous, I have almost everything, I’m powerful, and I am freaking amazing! The only thing that would make me complete is the power of God! However what did this mindset prove for him? his on destruction! Satan is the epitome of pride of a haughty spirit, so therefore pride was the first sin and the reason why he fell.
However, there is a lesson in Lucifer’s fall. We just like Satan/Lucifer can become so diluted in our pride, and arrogance that we start to think that we are higher than we ought to. You see your pride sets you up with a mirage of a throne, it’s what makes you think you can talk back to your parents, get away with stealing, undermine your teachers and authorities, and do whatever you want although God is watching you. Have you ever seen a person think he was so great and end up falling on his face. That will be you unless you humble your self and submit to God has and the authorities He has placed in your life, so as long as their authority matches up with His!

What Does He Set Out to Do

What Does He Set Out to Do

Satan is Our Enemy
says, “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Satan is a Tempter
gives that he is a tempter.
Satan Inflicts Suffering
In the book of Job, Satan tries to get Job to curse God.
Satan is an Accuser
In it gives that Satan is an accuser! When he had tried to accuse Joshua the High Priest in front of God! Scripture give in , that he is an accuser who accuses us before God day and night!
Satan is a Tempter
gives that he is a tempter.
I could give you more scripture about what Satan is about but it is obvious. Satan wanted to be God, Satan fell from heaven to earth, seeing God’s beautiful creation he sought to destroy it, seeing you as God’s most beloved of all creation he seeks to destroy you! Those of you who are Christians he seeks to destroy you most of all! Now he can’t destroy you as a Christian by tripping you up so much you lose your salvation and go to hell, you are in God’s hands! You have eternal security from the day you got saved! However he will try and destroy your witness, use you against others, and make you public spectacle of an unfaithful follower of Christ. He will accuse you bringing up all your failures making you think that God can’t really love you are making you doubt your salvation. And yes he may even seek your life, making you feel like there is nothing more to live for.
if you struggle with lies that the devil brings into your mind don’t let him.

What Are We Suppose to Do

Listen, if you are saved (and when I mean saved I mean Christ is the Lord and master of your life) you are a warrior for the Kingdom of God, you serve a mighty King who is your strength. Aka you’re threat to everything Satan has worked to destroy from the very beginning, you are a reminder of the One who has already conquered him and who will one day crush him completely. There is no reason why Satan wouldn’t want to snuff you from this earth, accuse you when you stumble in your walk with God, or use you against another!
Some of the scripture I mentioned above I purposefully left out a few things
10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
You won’t be able to stand against Satan and his powers, if you don’t cling as close to God as possible!
You must stand firm in other words you don’t compromise your faith with going out to parties, drinking, having sex, doing drugs! You compromise your faith when you have a friend that wants you to do one thing that is contrary to God and His Word!
You put on the belt of truth, meaning you live in God’s Word, not only reading it but doing what it says!
Put on the breast plate of righteousness! Keeping in the for front of your mind that Christ is your righteousness and always asking yourself does His righteousness match up with my actions.
Put on the shoes of readiness of the Gospel! Always know how the gospel changed your life, being ever thankful for Christ’s salvation, and prepared to share it.
Take up in all circumstances the Shield of Faith. It is this faith we believe that protects us from all the weapons of Satan, all his lies.
And lastly always, always pray in Spirit to God and for His church!
For it is with utilizing all the armor of God there is nothing Satan can bring against us!
if you struggle with lies that the devil brings into your mind don’t let him.
