We are living in times where we really need to be pressing in to Christ… Some of the things that are happening around us are difficult to comprehend… Sometimes we get a little too comfortable and forget that this world is not heaven… we are aliens and pilgrims on the earth… there is evil in our world
We are in our series of sermons entitled How to get through what you are going through… this morning we are going to talk about getting through our personal brokenness… Start of by saying that God can do incredible things today… if we just allow the Holy Spirit to really speak to us through message… Brokenness is something affect all of us… not only are there things presently but there are things in our past… that affecting us in the present.
A man went to his doctor in an acute state of anxiety.
“Doctor, you have to help me; I’m dying,” he said.
“Everything I touch hurts.
I touch my head and it hurts.
I touch my leg and it hurts.
I touch my stomach and it hurts.
I touch my chest and it hurts.
You have to help me, Doc; everything hurts.”
The doctor gave him a complete examination.
“I have good news and bad news for you,” he said.
“The good news is you are not dying.
The bad news is you have a broken finger.”
Brokenness are areas in our lives where we have experienced some sort of hurt… we have been wounded by someone’s words or actions towards or unfortunate circumstances of life...
These wounds can heal over time but we are often left with the scars… most us have a scar somewhere!

1. Identify Our wounds....
We all have physical scars but some of the worst scars we can have are invisible they are emotional scars.
All of have a scar somewhere on our bodies… some blemish that was either self inflicted or some else inflicted it.
I have a couple of scars that and that landed me in the emergency room as a kid… Sometimes scars will heal and other times they will be there as constant reminder… Scars remind of us of the past… not only do we have physical scars but we also carry emotional hurts.... emotional scars.. that even though something happened several years ago.. you are still dealing with that hurt… like that broken finger it affect every thing you touch...

Hurt people often transfer their inner anger onto their family and close friends… Often those around them become the recipients of harsh tones and fits of rage…
Hurt people interpret every word spoken to them through the prism their pain.
Ordinary words are misinterpreted to mean something negative towards them.
They are extremely sensitive and act out of pain instead of reality
Hurt people interpret every action through the prism of their pain.
Their emotional pain causes them to suspect wrong motives or evil intent behind other peoples actions towards them..
How Have we been Hurt?
The first things we would like to consider is the broken places in our lives..
These are not things we have imagined --- but actual words and actions of others that have brought pain into our lives… Wounds can be either Physical or mental in nature and usually result from the deliberate actions or words of others.
Some has hurt us…
If we are going to be set free from Hurts and old Scars… we have to acknowledge the broken places in our lives… Last wee we talked about Elijah rebuilding the broken Altar… these are personal Altars or prayer of worship…

We do ourselves a dis-service when we don’t acknowledge our emotional life...

We Rely on the Power of God
One of the challenges that David faced in his life was dealing with emotional hurt… There are more than 12 Occasions when King Saul attempt to take Davids life…
He attempts to kill him on two occasions with his spear.
He places David assigns David a dangerous military position but instead of loosing his life… David kept on winning battles…
Saul gives his Merab to David and then turns around and gives her to someone else.
David falls in love with another daughter Michal…
Saul gives a bridal price 100 philistines foreskins.. hoping that he would die in his efforts… eventually Saul stops hopes pretending and goes after David himself…David escapes with the help of Merab… and then
After David kills Goliath David he never returned home to his father Jesse but rather he stayed with King Saul…Despite David’s age.... Saul recognized that David was a leader and put him over men of war.… wherever David went battles victories were won… and when they came back from battle woman of Israel would gather and sing songs to one another -
“Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
When we talk about wounds we are talking about Physical or mental hurt, usually resulting from the deliberate actions or words of others.

All this attention on David began to making him angry --- he was getting jealous of David.... Something changed in the heart of Saul that day.. from this point onward — Saul will view David with suspicion and outright hostility..

Saul kept close eye on David — because he thought that David had ambitions for the throne… and he begin to envy David...
Envy is a destructive emotion “it looks at someone else's success.. possessions and gifting… we start to make comparisons and you can actually start to despise that person… Why?
Because we thing that we might deserve what that other person has.
Tim Keller tells us that
“Envy Destroys wisdom, Envy destroys love.
Envy destroys the ability to love.
Envy makes you unbelievably self-absorbed… You can actually feel envy coming your way” Tim Keller
I was recently… reading an email… and there is some strategic teams being formed in our district to encourage multiplication in our churches..
I started to have a bit of self pity… and a little bit of jealousy was creeping in… you have to shut that stuff down fast or it begins to eat at you...

There is actually a moment here when Saul could have kept his emotions in check… He could have recognized that there was an issue with his heart… it is from this point forward that that there is a hardening of the Heart of Saul.... Envy destroys your perspective and your ability to think straight and you lose the ability to see things the way they are.. Envy affects your wisdom… James tells us

It is interesting at the same time that Saul heart is hardening towards David… Jonathan and David are being knit together in a covenant friendship…
As we see the hardening of the Heart of Saul.... you have the contrast in His son Jonathan..
In my mind the person who could become jealous is Jonathan …Jonathan was the rightful heir to the throne… Jonathan had everything too loose--- he was closer in age to David when he was getting all the attention… he could have allowed his ego to be bruised… “Why is David getting all the attention?”

Jonathan doesn’t see David as a Threat..
If there is anyone who could or has the right to become jealous it is Jonathan …Jonathan was the rightful heir to the throne… Jonathan had everything too loose--- he was closer in age to David when he was getting all the attention… he could have allowed his ego to be bruised… “Why is David getting all the attention?”
David and Jonathan were bonding in an incredible friendship… They were in a covenant relationship… … Jonathan loved David as his own Soul… He took off his robe and armour and his bow and his belt and he gives it over to David…
at the same time we are told that Jonathan the rightful heir to the throne… Jonathan had everything too loose--- including the Kingship.. and family Dynasty…
If you were observing what was going on in Israel… It was amazing… It was time of favor and prosperity… An amazing team had formed and they working cohesively together....

When the woman of Israel came out — they came from all the cities of Israel… there was wide spreads political support… what they were singing were songs of victory… in essence what they sang “Our two heroes have killed, many many of our enemies..”
Envy affects the way we interpret events around us..
Saul interprets these songs in the worst possible sense… he saw the encouragement and Praise of the woman of Israel as a put down.....
He felt that he was being compared to David… We have to guard our emotions --- His feelings were hurt...
He was feeling slighted…
