The Solas
We started this new series last week called the The Solas: 5 sayings that will change your life.
Now this word Sola is latin for alone, and these 5 sayings that will change your life each have this word, sola, in them.
Last week we did Sola Scriptura which means Scripture Alone.
The big idea there is that the bible is our governing authority when it comes everything.
The way we speak, think, play, relationships, view ourselves and view the world and each other should be governed through the bible.
Think about this, if you’re really self conscious and you have a low view of yourself- that’s not a biblical way to view yourself.
God calls you son/daughter made in his image, the heirloom to the kingdom, greater than angels.
But only if you hold the bible as your final authority can you see this.
So Scripture Alone is the authority in our lives for all things.
WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK, WORK
Living on my own meant I needed to work.
My first job
Hard work
Responsibility
Learning everything on my own was rewarding but came with a lot of problems.
....
Everything in life points to a works = reward system.
Self image, work, school, weight loss, etc.
“Work = Rewards” does not work with God.
Grace is the means by which we are saved.
Grace is receiving what we don’t deserve.
Grace is hard for us to comprehend because nothing in life teaches us this.
Even when grace happens in our life (someone buying/offering food or things, someone paying something off for you, someone you hurt all of a sudden bailing you out or being nice to you) we twist that and make it sinful.
Free-loading = laziness
Free-loading is form of laziness
expecting nice things to happen from certain people means you’re using them.
Someone you hurt being nice to you might be seen as you thinking they have false motives and intentions.
[Refer back to the text] This is why Paul in Ephesians didn’t leave it at “gift from God”, but he had to keep pushing this truth - no one may boast!
gift vs wages
Wages of sin = what we deserve.
What is fair?
We don’t want fair from God.
Because that means God has to damn us.
“free gift” = means of grace.
God extending salvation to us.
Salvation is.....
We throw this word around a lot.
But what does it mean?
Salvation is freedom from the wages of sin, and reconciled to God. [Break that down]
Freedom from sin.
Assisted salvation vs sovereign salvation
We don’t contribute to our salvation because we are dead.
Dead people can’t contribute to anything.
God does all the work so he gets all the glory.
Reconciled to God
Sin makes us enemies with God.
Do you have an enemy?
Do you have someone you can’t stand being around?
Because of God’s work through Christ, we are no longer enemies but family.
Where Does That Leave Me
Christian
Important for you to understand the grace of God and be able to see it in your every day lives.
Example: Narnia.
Extend the same grace given to you to others.
Rest in knowing you don’t have to keep up for God but that your obedience comes from being given that which you don’t deserve.
Unbeliever
Important for you to understand that God loves you and offers this grace to you tonight- You feel that tug in your heart to commit, thats the spirit calling you to repentance and acceptance.
Extend that same grace to yourself and others and forgive yourself as you seek forgiveness from others.
Now it’s time to live active, you have the power of the Holy Spirit in you now giving you the strength to be free from sin and live in obedience to God.
