Person and Power of the Holy Spirit: Leader

Eschatological Ethics
Present Suffering creates Groaning
Problem in the Text: Present Suffering
Our suffering
Creations groaning: ‘as in the pains of childbirth.’
Creation is groaning ‘as in the pains of childbirth.’
Today: Problems
Dante’s church
Present Glory
Present Condition:
No longer Slaves but heirs.
Freed Slaves who still suffer
Groans are Groans of Anticipation:
The Spirit leads us: vs. 14
Brought you to Sonship
Through there is suffering, the Spirit reminds us of who we are.
Brought you to Sonship
The Spirit bears Witness for Us (Testifies to us)
The Spirit bears Witness for Us (Testifies to us)
Vs. 16 The Spirit tells us that we are God’s Child
The Spirit bears Witness for Us (Testifies to us)
Through there is suffering, the Spirit reminds us of who we are.
BUT, until then there is suffering!
BUT, until then there is suffering!
The Spirit bears Witness for Us (Testifies to us)
What was Created is thrown into Frustration
Creation fell into frustration
Through there is suffering, the Spirit reminds us of who we are.
The Spirit Intercedes for Us through Wordless Groans
Holy Spirit was there at Creation and experienced the Fall of Creation
Creation fell into frustration
“Synapses misfire. Volcanoes erupt. Earthquakes rip. Hurricanes shred. Tornados zap. Forest fires burn. Mudslides burry. Trees collapse. Animals bite- the way creation can destroy and kill are results of the fall, and creation groans in anticipation of getting fixed! It was in order. God ordered it well and called it good. But now it’s unpredictable and can cause heartbreaking tragedy.”
In , God spoke to Adam, Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles…
The Spirit Intercedes with Wordless Groans
The Spirit leads us: vs. 14
We Groan as Ones who has the First fruits of the Spirit
We were sealed and sowed, but we still suffer.
What he is saying is rather that the Spirit acts in our place and intercedes for us, performing the function of a Paraclete and helping us in our weakness in prayer. The process which Paul has in view is thus a process in the heavenly and divine sphere.12 Hence the στεναγμοὶ ἀλάλητοι (v. 26) are not unspoken, wordless sighs but sighs which cannot be grasped in words, like the ἄρρητα ῥήματα of 2 C. 12:4. But God understands the language of the Spirit, “because he intercedes for the saints in a way which corresponds to the will of God,” v. 27. TDNT
Just as creation is bound in it’s present state of confusion and waiting for it to be restored, we are waiting for our adoption to Sonship and the redemption of our bodies.

Click Vs. 23: Not only us, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to Sonship, the redemption of our bodies. NIV
Those with hope in Jesus have the firstfruits of the Spirit. The term firstfruits is a technical one, referring to the ancient Jewish practice of farmers donating their best portions of their crop or herd to the temple. It’s your first fruits because they literally were their first batch of quality items to donate.

For us, we have received the firstfruits of the Spirit, which means that God has given us His best and his first until the final harvest is completed. In other words, while we are groaning in anticipation of the new heaven and the new earth, God has given us Himself- something we will unpack more in May with Pentecost. The firstfruit of the Spirit means God is with us to encourage us and to lift us up and to remind us of the hope we have in Jesus Christ during the struggle.
Paul reminds us that while we suffer, God is letting us know that those in faith have already have his very best: The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit serves in this way as the endearing title Jesus gives Him: Our Comforter. When Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our Paraclete- it’s the title Comforter. While we suffer, we have a comforter. While we suffer, we have a comforter.
Our present suffering is not something that we do isolation. Often times suffering leads to questions about the lack of God’s presence, or the lack of God’s awareness or if He even cares. We shake our fists in honest anger:
Where are you Lord!?! Why can’t I feel you while I’m in this pain?!?
And there’s room for these questions: In fact, the Psalms allow for this type of honesty. Even Jesus himself cried out while he hung:
Elio, Elio, Lama, Sabachtani: My God, my God, why have your forsaken me…
But this calling out to God only confirmed Jesus’ identity as the Son of God. Jesus didn’t cry out- you aren’t my God. No, it’s a confession: My God, my God!
See, the Holy Spirit reminds us- even in our suffering- who we belong to! We belong to God! The word Sonship in verse 23 is another technical word used in the Greco-Roman world for those who were adopted and would receive the full rights of sons. And so those in Christ groan inwardly as we wait for the full inheritance of this adoption.
During the day-to-day struggle, the Spirit reminds us: You are God’s son! You are God’s daughter! Someday you’ll know what this means in it’s totality. You’ll experience it in a place that is predictable and safe. Someday you’ll feel in the richest sense what it means to belong to God’s family, but without the cancer, without fetal alcohol syndrome, without the human trafficking, without war or rumors of war, without the marital fights, without the pain of loss, without the fear of death, without guns. Guns will be turned into combines the same way swords will be turned into plow sheers.
The Holy Spirit reminds us of who are we until then: a child loved, protected, planned for, provided for, signed and sealed.
Trajectory: Maturity to inheritance!
