Coverings (Parents)

I grew up bringing mom’s money to church. Then writing dad’s checks out once I got to church. I’ve never known a time that I didn’t tithe and give an offering. But neither of my parents taught me how to give by faith.
Imprinting: sexually, traditions, who to cheer for!

The Message9 I want you to be smart in the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you’ll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behavior.”
Your spirituality is related to your giving.
Some would guess Matt 6:33
Automatically, someone’s mind thought “I’m spiritual. I give in church.”
Statement is more than that. Your giving and your target of giving is what I’m talking about.

What Does the Word Say?

Matthew 6:24 NKJV
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
This is saying that no matter what you think about money, who you connect with around money, money teach you have to live!!!!You are who you are when you have it and when you don’t
Proposition: I think many of us have been worshipping at the wrong altar. Jesus says, there are only 2
Luke 15:29 NKJV
29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends.
Acts 20:19–20 NKJV
19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews; 20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house,
Literally means “a slave to”
Romans 1:1 NKJV
Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God
you can only have one!!! World system or Kingdom!!! You can’t stay stuck in church…too many games. When you hold out, disobey, etc, you serve Mammon.
Real Talk: Mammon got his hand around yo neck, you just don’t reconize he’s showing up in Master Card, Macy’s card, Nieman’s, Mercedes
1 Thessalonians 1:9 NKJV
For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,

Exhibit #2: We’ve got something twisted.

It’d be very interesting to see if you thought your self as an idol worshipper.
Define an idol: A physical representation of a deity, usually used as an object of worship. - Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary
Worship
Worship is homage (special honor or respect shown publicly); it is an attitude and activity designed to recognize and describe the worth of a person.
Dictionary of Biblical Imagery
Hosea 13:2 NKJV
2 Now they sin more and more, And have made for themselves molded images, Idols of their silver, according to their skill; All of it is the work of craftsmen. They say of them, “Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves!”
It’s your money that you use in exchange for that which it is that you want to worship.
The dollar isn’t the idol, it’s what you use it for to buy the graven images. Said another way, money isn’t the problem, what you want to do with it can be
Some of you are still having a problem. An idol is anything that takes God’s place.
Ex. Chinese restaurants, nail shops
Definition: Whatever takes God’s place.
App: Isn’t it funny how we make time for what we want.
Question: Just because you don’t understand what the “offering” does, does it mute the power thereof.
Ill: If you accidentally walked through the airport with a gun, would your forgetting be enough not to pay the price. Why would you willing do tht? as a matter

Money is neutral. It’s how we use it that matters.

Poll: When it comes to your money I trust God with 1) EVERYTHING 2) Most times 3) seasonally 4) rarely 5) only when I have to 6)
Could it be that we offer our money to the wrong idol because we don’t really trust God.
How do you break the grip

This is what I’ve been driving to…you’ve got to destroy the idol!!

Which is why Jesus is very clear:
NKJV24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
God has very strong opinions about our idols.
NKJV3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
NKJV5 Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. 6 Do not eat the bread of a miser, Nor desire his delicacies;
The title of this series should offend you every time you hear it or see it. It should be a reminder to you to break the power that money has in your life. You should save. You should be thinking about retirement. Your children’s children. Building a portfolio. An unhealthy relationship with money will make you miss your purpose. You begin to chase money and not God moments. You have to run your hearing through the grid “can I afford to do this.”

Your Allegiance Is Based on Your Level of Trust…which determines your Spirituality

1 Samuel 5:1–7 NKJV
1 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again. 4 And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only Dagon’s torso was left of it. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. 6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He ravaged them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how it was, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is harsh toward us and Dagon our god.”

Our parents have influenced our ideology about money more than we realize.

Lexham Theological Wordbook IdolatryIdolatry technically refers to the worship of an image or figure considered a representation or copy of a deity. Due to Yahweh’s prohibition of images, the worship of any image was worship of a god other than Yahweh—an act that amounted to rejection of and rebellion against the only true God.
Which is why Jesus is very clear:
Matthew 6:24 NKJV24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
God has very strong opinions about our idols.

For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
At the most basic level, it’s what you can make up and gets your attention more than the one than the Almighty. We see the influence of money when we don’t have it or can’t get more of it or don’t have enough. The World’s System vs. the K SystemThe K was all well and good when the 2008 cameIf you joy, is hinged on your qtrly statement; if you define yourself on what name brand you wear; Many would say that’s not me; but let it leave you.
