Introduction
It’s good to be on a winning team
The Hockinson Approach has been and will mean certain things.
Priority
(The priority of God’s glory)
Nehemiah
The rebuilt the sheep gate first
1911, The members of the Portland Finnish Congregational Church organized a mission church in Hockinson, WA
Unity
(We will work together)
Ojala, Lelachuer, Hale, White, Fuqua…a history of pastors who loved this congregation well and then kept loving it.
Not only pastors, but entire families, even generations who continue to serve the Lord here at HCC and beyond.
Rare are the moments when pastors or their families choose to stay, even more rare is when it has healthy results, to imagine a church where we can easily list a handful of last names (recognizing that there very well may be more) would be ridiculous if it wasn’t true.
Individuality
(We will honor and utilize the individual gifts and talents God has given individuals)
2 men with the same name.
Both worth mentioning.
Dave, Jon,
On nearly 100 occasions in the record of the first 90 years a work day is mentioned.
The first in 1961.
That was just once they started calling them “work days”.
Not men alone.
Our 75th anniversary record gives a list of the 7 charter members of this church.
5 of them are women.
Priests, goldsmiths, perfumers, rulers, servants, all brought their gifts to the task.
Generosity
(We will recognize that the gifts given to us are not for us alone, but we are blessed to be a blessing)
Pages and pages of financial documents, means nothing by itself, but .
Every dollar tells a story.
Look at this scripture, out of towners.
Men and women throughout the history of the church and specifically this church it have given sacrificially of their time, their talents, and their treasure.
Nehemiah 3:
Humility
(We recognize that God’s call sees no distinction)
The only negative...
1963 secretary report
“Though there are these bright spots that I have mentioned, there are certain things or a lack of certain things that I regret to state:
The lack of a broader outlook beyond our community;
The lack of interest in our business meetings; There should never be a meeting without a quorum.
The lack of members willing to offer their services in office; It is sad that in our church democracy we must have a Russian ballot because members are unwilling to submit their names for candidacy.”
Responsibility
(We call on each member to serve first in their own home, then to their neighbors, and then beyond…The same way the church is called on to make disciples “In Jerusalem, Judea, and to the ends of the earth”
The original plant
Missions, local outreach, service
Nehemiah 3
In the early 60s, Pastor LeLaCheur would go with others, including students to the Rocky Butte jail in Portland.
Missions support of Aaron and Erika Weatherl 95
YWAM, Gideon’s, Youth for Christ,
Intensity
(We believe the life of the disciple and the disciple making church is one of passionate commitment)
God has blessed us in 1961 but I believe we can accomplish more in 1962.‖
[signed] F. O. LELACHEUR.
Conclusion
It’s good to be a part of a winning team...
So what does that look like for us?
Love God, Love People, Make Disciples.
What is a disciple?
How? Intentional, relational discipleship
