Have you ever gone along with something without knowing why you were doing it?

You have not been baptized...
Maybe Baptism is one of those things, you don’t really understand it, you know all the christian people are doing it, you know you’ve been coming to church so you guess you should do it too…NO, let me stop you there. Our hope is that after tonight you get it, you understand if you already did it, what it actually meant. You understand if you haven’t done it what the true meaning of it is and can prepare yourself if it seems like the right thing to do.
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
The New International Version. (2011). (). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
It was common for the period to be categorized chronologically by the year and name of the ruler reigning at the time.
So what is Baptism?
Cermeonial cleansing has been done throughout the OT.
Cleansing the priests before the Lord

4 Then bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting and wash them with water.

Cleansing the offering before burning

13 You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water, and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them on the altar.

Cleansing the Levites for sanctification

7 To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes.

So Baptism as a cleansing in water has old roots…
But there is one aspect that makes baptism, as John taught it, radically different.

the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Now some believe baptism is essential for salvation, as Nazarenes we do not believe this. Nazarenes “understand baptism to be a symbol of the new relationship God establishes with His people.”
I thought showing off was bad, though...
So we get baptized as an outward display of an inward transformation.
Sounds good right, but I thought showing off was bad, though...
Poor woman in church.
S

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

What makes Baptism, like this widow significantly different? The heart behind it.
Baptism is about repentance.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,

‘Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.

5 Every valley shall be filled in,

every mountain and hill made low.

The crooked roads shall become straight,

the rough ways smooth.

6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ” o

7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

This relationship with God is through your heart, this is notable! Lets read on!

And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

This is CRAZY! John is saying this Jesus is going to change EVERYTHING! Before this, God was exclusive, the Jews were his “chosen people.” This swings this gate wide open. John is saying if your heart is right, you too can live for and with God.
But you know what else this is saying? This is a wake up call to all the Jews, who thought they were gonna get this salvation thing because their daddy’s brother’s uncle is second cousins with Abraham’s nephews sister! The family tree is not what determines your eternity.
So now John has given hope to the hopeless and made the hopefull a little more hopeless. Everyone is on the edge of their seat! So with seemingly one voice the crowd pleads WHAT SHOULD WE DO THEN?

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

John is calling followers to not lived saved, but rather live called!
The difference between these two lives is one is focused inward, while the other is focused outward. All it takes is a repentant heart!
Repentance is the fundamental reorientation towards God, which then leads to reconciliation of human relationships. In other words a change in attitude that reveals itself in the manner in which a person handles each aspect of their life.
The difference between these two lives is one is focused inward, while the other is focused outward.
Johns words were so inclusive and so transformative that the crowd began to think perhaps HE was the messiah.

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. SO WHAT?
Baptism is not going to save you, but Jesus will. Here are 3 things to prayerfully consider if you have not been baptized, and you reflect on your life in context to what Jesus is calling you to.
If you have not been baptized I invite you to really prayerfully consider your life in context to what Jesus is calling you to.
If you are sick of the sin in your life, sick of the effects of all your selfish choices think about the power you invite into your life if you choose to walk with Jesus.
Living for Jesus in a world that lives for themselves is hard. Consider the help you invite into your life if you choose to be baptized in front of a community of believers that want to help you in your walk.
Lastly consider who you could invite to your baptism that doesn’t know Jesus, and the impact that outward declaration could mean to them as someone who influences their life.
Ask yourself, are you living saved or called?
