How to Become the Kind of Church God Desires:
Part 4- Developing A Community Of Fellowship
() 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

THE DEFINITION OF FELLOWSHIP

A. Scriptural words that are translated as “fellowship.” In the NT:

* koinonia (κοινωνία), (a) “communion, fellowship, sharing in common” (from koinos, “common”).

* koinonos (κοινωνός) denotes “a partaker” or “partner”.

B. Biblical understanding of the word:

interest and a mutual, active participation in that interest and in each
other. Its basic meaning is “association, communion, fellowship, close
relationship.”

THE BASIS OF FELLOWSHIP

The common experience of God’s Grace and mercy in Christ.

* () “Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about
the salvation we all share (τῆς κοινῆς ⸀ἡμῶν σωτηρίας).

The common gift of the Holy Spirit.

* () “Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles,* some are
1 Corinthians 12:13 NLT
Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.
slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body
by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.”

The common bond of Christian familial love.

* ()14 I am writing these things to you now, even
1 Timothy 3:14–15 NLT
I am writing these things to you now, even though I hope to be with you soon, so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.
though I hope to be with you soon, 15 so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

The common purpose of fulfilling Christ’s final command.

*  () But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 NLT

THE DISTINGUISHING MARKS OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

A. A common Commitment to Christ

() 20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God.* And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.*
() “We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

B. Love for one another.

() “This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another.
() “14 If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers,* it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 15 Anyone who hates another brother or sister* is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.
16 We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.
() 18 Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. 19 Our actions will show that we belong to the truth, so we will be confident when we stand before God. 20

C. A focus on eternal things

() 28 And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so
that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from
him in shame.
“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set
your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of
honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things
of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in
God. 4 And when Christ, who is your* life, is revealed to the whole world,
you will share in all his glory.”
