Part 1
1 Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,
2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,
3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,
4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake,
6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world.
9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you,
10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.
11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;
12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.
13 I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles.
14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.

Who wrote Romans? Paul
Let’s look at verse 1
Paul- right off we are show who the author is.
Paul is the writer but he is not the source of the revelation.
Who is the source of the revelation of Romans? God
Remember God is able to perfectly communicate himself to man.

Now many teach that his name was change from Saul to Paul at his conversion.
That teaching is incorrect.
Saul was his Paul in the Hebrew.
Let me remind you that Paul was a Hebrew.
At birth he was probably given both names with Paul or Paulus being know by the gentiles.
Which could be possible why he refers Paul of Saul to show himself a friend or teacher of the Gentiles.
Some think that he would use the Gentile name as an expression of his humility.
Because he declared in

He identifies himself as,
Paul a Servant or Bond Servant to Jesus Christ.
In this decryption Paul points to his relationship to God by using the term Bond-Servant of Jesus Christ.
The word here for Bond-Servant is the Greek word Doulos meaning slave or bond servant.
Paul use this term for himself in , , and .
This phase express the relationship that we all should have as believer in Christ.

This expression point to ownership.

We belong to the one who paid the prize for us on the cross.
Dr. Carrol Thompson says this,
“Paul, as the servant of God, not only proclaimed the message of the Gospel by mouth, but also wrote down, in human words, the message of God. As one looks at his life, one must conclude he was the servant of God whose life demonstrated complete dedication.” Dr. Carrol Thompson

Called here is the word klay-tos invited, that is, appointed, or (specifically) a saint. One separated to a chosen task.
Do you know that God has chosen and separated a task for you in your life?
Paul was invited and appointed an apostle.
The word apostle is, ap-os'-tol-os specifically an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ (“apostle”), (with miraculous powers): - apostle, messenger, he that is sent.
Why do you think Paul take the time to say that he was called to be a apostle?
He was not 1 of the 12.
He did not walk with Christ for the 3 year that he was alive in the earth.
After Paul’s conversion, Paul gained an incredible ability to prove Jesus is the Christ (Messiah.) It so angers Jews in the city that they conspire to kill him ().
After learning of the plot against his life, Paul flees the city at night by having Christians lower him down a gate wall using a basket! Once out of the city he travels to Arabia, where for three years he is personally taught by Jesus

15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased
16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,
17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus.
18 Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days.

Why is that important? Because Paul spend time walking and being taught by Jesus.

It is because this Gospel we are able to bring about the obedience of faith among not just the Jews but the Gentiles for his name sake.

Why? For his name Sake.
This is why we do anything,
For his name sake.
Remember that The Messiah was not to be limited to the Jews as Messiah, but he is to be known to all the people as the Son of God.
Lets Read Verse 7-10

Who is this to? To all who are beloved of God.

In some manuscripts in Rome is actually omitted.
Even if it was not this is still a universal statement not limited just to Rome.
The word Saint here is the word Hagio meaning Holy Ones.
The Roman church was called “saints” – saints by virtue of in whom they were.
Notice the Reputation they had in verse 8

The word serve here is used in a special sense to denote the service rendered to Jehovah.

Not only does it mean serve it means ministered to or worship.
So in my spirit the preaching of the gospel of His Son, I worship you.

Notice Paul great desire to come there to Rome.
Let me stop here and say that,
The origin of the church in Rome is still a mystery.
· The Roman Catholic say it was started by peter
· Others say it was started by the converts from Jerusalem
· Some say it was stated by the convert of Paul from Asia Minor
· While others say it was started by Cornelius, the Roman Centurion.
In verse 11-15 we will see the author (Paul’s) heart

Also translated debtor.
Debtor to the educated and the uneducated, to the wise and the foolish.
A Christian is born in debt to Christ. The only way to pay this debt is to share Jesus Christ with others.
David Brainerd says this,
“I cared not where or how I lived or what hardship I went through, so that I could gain souls for Christ. While I was asleep I dreamed of these things, and when I was awake the first thing I thought of was this great work. All my desire was for the conversion of the heathen and all my hopes was in God.”
Now after saying all this Paul say,
I am eager or better translated I am Ready to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
