Why do we hold parades?
Why do we hold parades?
In general why do we hold parades? - for the most part a parade is in remembrance of something already done. This parade we are looking at today is a parade that has been organized by the Lord Himself. He prearranged the things needed and set in motion a chain of events that forever changed the world and the way of God.
(Slide) Parades are oftentimes to give tribute to hero’s. And in the crowd of this parade there more than likely are people like.
(Slide) Judas who was about to give Him up
(Slide) Peter who was about to deny Him
(Slide) Nicodemus who was a secret follower of Jesus
(Slide) Pharisee’s who wanted to capture and kill Him
Oh wait, those are not the ones we should be highlighting, how about these.
(Slide) A blind man who can now see
(Slide) A dead man who is now alive
(Slide) A woman who spent all she had to be healed, has been healed by Christ.
(Slide) An adulterous woman who is a forgiven sinner and now a follower
(Slide) Jesus needed this parade for two reasons.
(Slide) To show that He is the Messiah fulfilling prophesy
(Slide) To force the Jewish leadership to do something with Him (for now His hour has come)
Turn to Pgs. 115-6 in Story Book, and Lk19:28-44 in Bible

(Slide) There is much in this passage, but what sticks out to you and why?
Interesting that this is an event mentioned in all 4 Gospels, though in the Luke account there is no mention of palm branches for his focus is on something else. Luke is really continuing on with what has previously been taught. Jesus is the King and He is going to receive His Kingdom and this is the illustration to prove it and remove any or all doubt.
His kingdom was not the kingdom they were expecting (earthly) though He told them different. And he will remind them again soon.
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
His kingdom will come with Power
1 And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
I said this section was “The Lord needs it” And the Lord needed this parade, but think about what else the Lord had needed.

(Slide A room to share a meal (Mt26:18)
(Slide) Today a colt (Lk19:30)
(Slide) Can you think of anything else that the Lord needs? - a tomb to be buried in, how about you! He needs YOU! Your are His plan to carry His message today by word and deed.
Now in this section there are some differences between the gospel, these are not contradictions, remember each writer has a particular audience and points they are pointing to. Luke only mentions the colt, whereas the others mention a donkey and a colt. Let’s keep going and look at this passage.
Just some information about the view (v.29) - The city of Bethany is near the Mt of olives (Mt. Olivet) it looks over the Kidron Valley. From elevation for 2600 ft. a person can look across and see Jerusalem and the temple mount. Bethany was on the eastern side of the Mount of Olives about 3 mi from Jerusalem.
(Slide) OK, here is a question, what were the instructions to the two disciples (vv.30-31)?
(Slide) What did they need to do to the colt (v.30-31)? - they had to loose it; when someone is born again, they come from death to life, like Lazarus they need to be loosed. Do we know people who are still bound that need to be loosed?
44 The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Jesus needs YOU, needs you to help share the Truth of the Word where people are loosed. Jesus needs YOU to live a life in freedom as an example to others so they can be loosed. Maybe you need prayer to be loosed of something, don’t stop today, ask for prayer, join in prayer and be loosed.
We are told in this passage that the colt which no one had sat
(Slide) Question is what would be normal of a colt that needs to be done before it could be used like it is about to be? - normally it would have to be broken, but here the colt submits to Jesus, just proof that all creation submits to the Lord.
A donkey that was fit for a king!
33 The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
This prophesy fulfilled, this proclamation is pretty clear to those who were there who saw this visual testimony!
A donkey would also symbolize the king was coming in peace. If on a horse it would be for war.
The other reason for the parade that Jesus orchestrated this parade is to force the hand of the Jews for they hoped to arrest him after the Passover
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in the court of the high priest, named Caiaphas; 4 and they plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”
Jesus knew the cross was before Him and He was to be the Passover sacrifice. He is fulfilling the prophesy spoken by John.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

OK now in looking at this next section (vv.35-40)
(Slide) What did the disciples do (v.35)? - threw their coats on the colt
(Slide) What did the people do (v.36)? - threw coats on the road which is a pay of paying homage to a king (i.e. 2Kng9:13)
(Slide) What was everyone doing (v.37)? - the crowd is the crowd of followers of Jesus not the people of Jerusalem, they are shouting praises over all the miracles He had done.
(Slide) What were they saying (v.38)? - they are saying HE is a blessing using a quote from Psm118:26
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord; We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
Now it is not a full quote, that was a quote said to people as they entered Jerusalem for one of the feasts.
(Slide) Now put on your thinking caps, what are they expecting Jesus to do when He enters Jerusalem? - Establish His kingdom, to free the people from under Roman oppression.
(Slide) Do you notice anything else they say (v.38)? - P
They are saying peace in heaven, well peace came to earth already but the people were not willing to accept it.
14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
He started life to bring peace
People did not want to accept His peace; for they did not want to accept Him
11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
This was a day that should be bringing them peace but it was not going to, it was bringing future destruction because they do not recognize that God was among them.
The glory in the highest they are calling for is right there, in their midst.
The Pharisee’s did not understand the significance of what was going and they now cry out their reply to the disciples
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”
(Slide) Why do you suppose they wanted the disciples to be quiet?
Do people want you to be quiet about your King? (keep this very short)
(Slide) What was Jesus response (v.40)?
I know the passage we read actually covered through (v.44) but I want us to pick up there next week. There is still more that we can get from this parade and Jesus heart in (vv.41-44)
