The Question

James 2:14 NASB95
What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
James
Faith alone through Christ alone by grace alone.
Ephesians 2:8-9
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
James answers the question right away.
James 2:15–17 NASB95
If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
James 2:15-
One of Martye’s love languages is acts of service. If I say that I lover her, but never display that love with works, am I really loving her?
James 2:18 NASB95
But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
James 2
I love to ride motorcycles. If you want to see if someone really loves to ride, look at their odometer.

WARNING: WORKS WITHOUT FAITH

Jesus said that many would hold up their works to him, but they wouldn’t be accepted.
Matthew 7:22 NASB95
“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
Matthew
If every time you do something good you have to tell everyone about it, then are you doing it for his glory or your own.
Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Is it possible to put a bunch of miles on your bike and not love riding?
James 2:
James 2:19–20 NASB95
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
James gives two examples of faith proven through works:
Abraham.
James 2:21–23 NASB95
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.
James 2:21-
Proof marks on a gun when it is tested.
Parachute

The proof is in the pudding.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
James 2:
James 2:24 NASB95
You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Ephesians
Ephesians 2:8–10 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
James 2:25 NASB95
In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
James 2:25
Joshua sent spies and they stayed with Rahab and she said that she believed that God had given them the land.
She hid the spies
and saved her family.
James 2:26 NASB95
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
James 2:
