“Over the years, I learned that each part of the evening focuses on a particular phase of God’s ministry in our lives. The bread and the cup commemorate the past act of Jesus’ shed blood and his body given for the forgiveness of our sins once and for all. The footwashing focuses on the present and daily need for cleansing from sin (). Jesus told Peter, ‘a person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet’ (). Finally, the future is symbolised in the agape as a precursor to the wedding supper of the Lamb (). People are servants of other human beings or servants of God. Footwashing is a reminder that love takes action“Love one another with brotherly affection. Reminds us that we are washed clean from our sin; Christ shed his blood that we may have access to the presence of God! We are promised in “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” We are given a principle in (ESV) “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” It is the Lord’s desire that we be cleansed, Jesus said, (ESV) “I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

Take this as an opportunity to reflect on that last meal Jesus had with his disciples. We are looking ahead to the wedding supper of the Lamb () At the beginning of the service, I read from . In verse 16, Jesus says, “For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”().

He will return; “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” And our God is a God who keeps his promises.

13:1–17 The Humble Servant

The love of Jesus for His disciples, and those who would come to be His disciples, is shown in the washing of the disciples’ feet. The servant motif, so prevalent in the Gospel of Mark (), is here revealed as well in the Gospel of John. Servanthood is a direct extension and representation of love (13:1). What enabled Jesus to perform this act of utter humility was a keen understanding of who He was, where He had come from, and where He was going (13:3). This is a key to humility in all persons—a healthy and balanced understanding of who they are.

If Jesus, Lord and Teacher, washes our feet, how much more should we wash one another’s feet (13:14). What is at hand is not the institution of an ordinance of foot-washing, as this passage has sometimes been interpreted, but the life-style of humble servanthood.
