Intro

During a Monday night football game between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, one of the announcers observed that Walter Payton, the Bears’ running back, had accumulated over nine miles in career rushing yardage. The other announcer remarked, “Yeah, and that’s with someone knocking him down every 4.6 yards!”

Walter Payton, the most successful running back ever, knows that everyone—even the best—gets knocked down. The key to success is to get up and run again just as hard.

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Need to have someone to look to 10-13

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Persecution is going to happen if we follow God.
Timothy has closely examined Paul.
Know or followed means he has closely examined Paul.
Paul isn't boasting about his own life but is pointing to values that are absolutely necessary in a believers life.

In place of the familiar “faith, hope, and love” Paul replaces “hope” with “patience” and after “love” writes “endurance.” These four words convey the idea of waiting a situation out with steadfastness, an appropriate action for a person who has hope

Everyone will be persecuted. This looks different from age to age and country to country but one thing remains the world is hostile to the Kingdom of God. Be prepared to face hardships.
Timothy had Paul to look to and see what persevering looked like. Now Paul is telling Timothy don’t think I am the only one, you will be as well.
It may look frightening when we look out and see the suffering but know the victory is ours.
I remember when Hudson was in the hospital
Do you have someone in your life that you look to. Someone when things go wrong they are a positive example?
Don’t miss the warning its a slippery slope.

Must look to scripture 14-17

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

How will you respond?
The term “continue” (menō) is the same term translated “hold to” or “remain” in ; . It demands more than merely continuing in orthodoxy. It called for a commitment to live and abide in what Timothy had learned.

Between the Godly influences and the Holy Scriptures Timothy has been given the tools to endure.

Those whom you have learned, this goes beyond Paul, it brings up his mother Eunice and his Gma Lois. These people have invested into Timothy.

First, the Scriptures describe the process of conversion. They outline the method by which individuals can be saved. The Scriptures also show believers how they are to live, grow, and serve. The Scriptures will provide directions for believers who want to work out their own salvation.

He isn’t telling him this but is reminding him about this.
Paul is talking about the Old Testament!
It isn't that scripture breathes inspiration but the idea that God breathed his Character into Scripture in such a way that in is inherently inspired.
The scripture is the basis for doctrine.
Benefits of Scripture
Rebuking, Scripture can show sinners their failures, clarify the point of the mistake, and lead them to a new sense of peace and wholeness.
Provide correction, it shows us what we did that was wrong but then it helps restore us to a right relationship with Christ.
Moral training that leads to righteous living. If we look to the scriptures we will find a system of discipline that lead to a Holy life.
If Timothy would nurture his spiritual life in the Scriptures that he would use in his ministry, he would be fully qualified and prepared to undertake whatever tasks God put before him.

The New American Commentary: 1, 2 Timothy, Titus Excursus 5: Inspiration, Infallibility, Inerrancy, and Authority

If Timothy would nurture his spiritual life in the Scriptures that he would use in his ministry, he would be fully qualified and prepared to undertake whatever tasks God put before him.

Christians can receive strength for the Christian pilgrimage from two sources. First, they can observe the lives of other believers. Paul urged Timothy to look at his life in order to learn and apply Christian truth (vv. 10–13). Timothy could observe two features from Paul’s life. He could learn that persecution was certain (v. 12). He could also be reminded of divine strength and protection (v. 11). Even though hardship was certain, divine strength was even more pervasive.
The second source of strength for the Christian pilgrimage is Scripture. Paul focused on three contributions Scripture can provide for the believer. The Scriptures contain the explanation of God’s plan of salvation (v. 15). They contain an outline of doctrine and truth that support the plan of salvation (v. 16). The Scriptures also provide warning to keep Christians from wandering afield from God’s will.
Those who obey the commands and respond to the promises of Scripture can find the strength to live a life of such arresting quality that it can encourage and enlighten others.

I love to work on cars weather it be an oil change or brakes I enjoy it. There is just something about it. But what I have realized is that it is no fun when I don’t know what I am doing. So I go to the chiton or Haynes guide and read about it or watch some youtube. It never fails if I will look at the book I can get it or if I look to those who have been before me I can handle it. But if I go at it alone I’ll fail.
Do you value the word of God or have you disregarded it? Are you going at it alone?

The END

3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.

which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

The world is tuff there is no deny that. Today alone has been a ruff one. Between court and hospital visits it has been taxing. Paul understood this, he also knew that young timothy could look back one day and say he had finished strong.
Points:
1.! “At the end of his life, [Paul] wrote to Timothy and triumphantly declared, ‘I have

In this passage, Paul uses the metaphor of an athlete competing in a contest and winning a crown as a reward (vv. 7-8), much like the Olympic athletes of antiquity won wreaths or leafed crowns as the symbol of their award. Paul kept his focus on the end goal: to be rewarded by the Judge in “that day” our focus on eternity and the reality of standing before God one day as a motivating perspective. Unlike most races, our spiritual race is not about coming in first. It’s about finishing. If we don’t give up, if we don’t quit, then we win. Even if we have made mistakes, fallen down, or fallen behind, we can get up again and still finish well. God’s grace allows us to finish well. God empowers us, just like Derek Redmond’s.
