Notes & Transcripts

How good has God been?

He has been good to us, His people
Rahab told the spies that all of her people were afraid of the Israelites because they had heard of how good God was to them (Red Sea…)
Spies come back to Joshua & give report and Israelites begin moving towards Promise but they have to cross Jordan
God held back waters and 12 priest stood holding the ARK of the covenant
one on his own rock
until the people had passed
Joshua had 12 men together and
Joshua 4:3 ESV
and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan, from the very place where the priests’ feet stood firmly, and bring them over with you and lay them down in the place where you lodge tonight.’ ”
Joshua 4:3-
Joshua 4:6–7 ESV
that this may be a sign among you. When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’ then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever.”
Joshua 4:6
Acknowledge that God has blessed
It helps to build our relationship with Him
try it with your spouse
when we praise others for the good that they have done for us
they will appreciate that we acknowledged them for these things
It will help us to remember how good they are to us
because sometimes wives can forget how good their husbands are...
it helps us to remember
Romans 1:25 ESV
because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
if we are not careful we can end up worshiping what God has given us rather than the God who gave it
we can become entitled feeling like we deserve these blessings
We must remember that we love God and by praising Him will help us to do that
praising helps us recognize goodness when it comes
Acknowledge that God has blessed
they wen’t into the river to gather up the stones b/c they recognized that God had blessed them
so they acknowledged but also
Keeping memories of God’s blessings and provisions will help us through the next struggle
often times in life we will have to go through rough waters
carry these memory stones with us then we can use them for the next crossing
we must remember to keep our feet on the Rock
Paul and Silas were in prison
Acts 16:25–26 ESV
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s bonds were unfastened.
because when our feet are on the Rock miracles and blessings come
Psalm 22:3 ESV
Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
He is sitting on the throne where He recieves praises of His people
We will find His presence in the midst of our praises
SO, when our feet are on the Rock then we will not be alone in the storm
What if it’s too late? I’m already in over my head
It’ll be like Peter who Jesus called to walk upon the water
distracted by the waves and began to sink
looked up and saw Jesus’ hand to pull him up
Praising God will help get us
Praising Him will help us recognize that He is still blessing us
Acknowledge that God has blessed
Praising Him will help us to remember when times get tough
Keep memories of God’s blessings and provisions to help us through the next struggle
By continuing to share how God has blessed is a reminder to us and those around us of the goodness of God
It will affect the lives of those around us
For some, praising God may give you an opportunity to have some friends
Because praise leaves no room for negativity
and no one likes to be around someone who is always negative
Psalm 95:2–3 ESV
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
people are drawn to those who have joy
when and to whom should we praise God?
I believe that we should praise Him in the privacy of our homes, in worship with God’s people at church, and around the individuals that God has placed in our lives… all the time
Psalm 35:18 ESV
I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you.
Psalm 35:28 ESV
Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long.
But what if someone that you know is going through a struggle that you have been through (and maybe don’t even know it)
when they hear you praise God for how He took care of you through that struggle then it will give them hope through Jesus as well
