Introduction
Reaching the mountain top does not always guarantee freedom from a storm.
Sometimes the mountain top is the place in which the God reveals himself to you like never before.
It is interesting to note that your calling can be revealed at the top of the mountain or in the bottom of the valley, it is just important that you respond to the call of God.
God has the ability to show up in a number of ways, at various times, but the important part is that you respond to the call properly.
Moses, one of the highly regarded leaders in the bible had made missteps nonetheless God thought it fitting to use him to lead his people out of Egypt.
It is interesting to note some qualities about Moses prior to God calling him.
We are aware that Moses was protected by his family even at the expense of an ordinance that proclaimed that sons were to thrown in the Nile.
This king oppressed the people of Isreal at the expense of fear due to their population growth at that time.
Understand that Moses comes from people who were strong in faith.
A mother so strong in faith that she put her son in an unknown place, given to unknown people, to protect him in the midst of an unknown future.
Now it is time for the faith of Moses to be solidified by following to the call of God.
It is interesting that the call of God comes sometimes when we are running from our past, nonetheless we need to be ready to move when God says move.
Sometimes God sends you back home for a different task than you left with.
God will Find You on the Run
Moses fled Egypt because he had murdered a man, verse 15 of Exodus chapter 2 states “when Pharoah heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses.
But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian and he sat down by a well.
Understand that your calling is evident even in the midst of a storm.
Verse 17 in Chapter 2 states “then the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock”.
Then again in chapter 3, God appears to Moses while he is tending to the flock.
It was the habitual occupation of Moses to keep the flock.
Many of us run from God but find ourselves doing exactly what God created us to do.
Even while on the run attempting to fit in with those in the foreign land he finds him self shepherding rather than taking on the common job of the local people.
History states that Midian was a copper-mining group of people nonetheless Moses finds a job shepherding sheep.
You may be able to run from the physical location but God puts things in us that we can never run from.
It is interesting to note that even when we run from God he’s still preparing us for his will.
When God Shows Up
Moses was leading the flock out of the wilderness long before the exit from Egypt.
“he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb the mountain of God”
Sometimes God has you do things you believe are unrelated to the call but are preparing you for the call all along.
When God shows up, you must be ready.
The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
The phrase “angel of the Lord” meaning the messenger of Yaweh, appeared to Moses, nonetheless Moses is unsure what he is looking at he just knows it is time to pay attention to what God is doing on this mountain.
Angel of the Lord is translated to Messenger of God
We have to pay attention to God when He is using our curiosity to turn our attention to him.
When God has your attention it is time for you to pay attention.
Do not neglect your curiosity for being here today.
Understand that curiosity can bring about salvation and purpose in your life.
Do not turn away from the vision of God because it is something you have never seen before.
It’s unfortunate that we automatically think that because we have never seen it, it is not possible.
I must turn aside, his curiosity now is compelling him to go over and look at the bush.
God called to Moses
God calls with a purpose.
We have all been called according to our salvation.
We are reminded of the text There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling.
But when God calls to, meaning he calls you to do something it is time to move.
Paul was called “to” be an apostle.
God called to Abraham a second time from heaven.
God called “to” Moses and said “Here I am”
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham and he said Here I am
When God calls to you and lets you know that he is doing the calling you have to respond!
The way we
Curiosity, Approach, Belong
Something should change, I should not be the same person that was curious about God once I have made the decision to belong and work for God.
We came to God with baggage, sin, mess, turmoil.
Understand we cannot work for God with all of those external issues lingering over our head.
When we draw near to God, some change has to occur.
Understand that some of us have been called to God but aren’t ready to work for God there is still some preparation that must take place.
Then he said, Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.
The sacredness was not in the place, but the sacredness was who was in the place.
We approach worship like this building is sacred, it has nothing to do with the building that we have been invited to.
It has everything to do with the presence of God in the building we have been invited to.
The ground was made holy by the presence of God.
We can answer the call but some change has to take place before we receive the instructions.
God is not concerned with monuments and zip codes.
He is concerned with wherever we are our love allows his presence to move through this place.
Moses walked to the top of that mountain a shepherd for Midian, but will walk down a shepherd for the chosen people of God.
This is why he had to take his shoes of, bare feet symbolized the role of a servant.
Many of us get to the mountaintop of life just for God to send us back to the valley to serve his people to get back to the mountain top of his presence.
