Review

To those dispersed (separated from home)… who have been called by God to salvation.
Vss 3-12 are basically reflective of the New Birth we have in Christ. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (, NASB95PARA)

Therefore

In light of this reflective truth… We are called – encouraged – to live different lives… to live in the hope of Eternity!
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (, NASB95PARA)

The Revelation (return) of Jesus Christ

This a future motivator. (also mentioned in vs 7) The Return of Christ and the Kingdom of Christ should be the focus and balanced obsession of every Believer.
Outlook determines outcome; attitude determines action.
“The revelation of Jesus Christ” is another expression for the “living hope” and “the appearing of Jesus Christ.” Christians live in the future tense; their present actions and decisions are governed by this future hope. Just as an engaged couple makes all their plans in the light of that future wedding, so Christians today live with the expectation of seeing Jesus Christ. -Wiersbe

Disciplined mind

Prepare your minds for action: “gird up the loins of your mind”
Cross reference The Belt of Truth: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,” (, NASB95PARA)
A disciplined mind is focused (outlook determines outcome):
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;” (, NASB95PARA)
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (, NASB95PARA)
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” (, NASB95PARA)

Sober mind

to get self-control ⇔ sober up v. — to curb the controlling influence of inordinate emotions or desires (and therefore become reasonable); conceived of as sobering up from the influence of alcohol.
Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,” (, NASB95PARA)
To be sober-minded means to be free from every form of mental and spiritual “drunkenness” or excess. Rather than being controlled by outside circumstances, believers should be directed from within. It means “get your head in the game”.

Optimistic mind (attitude determines action)

Holy living demands determination; we have every reason to have a hope filled attitude!
(NASB95PARA)
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. 24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.
Paul told the Thessalonian church to “comfort one another with these words.” (, NASB95PARA) WHAT WORDS???
15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

Outlook determines outcome; attitude determines action.

We are to have disciplined, sober, optimistic minds. That means we will look different than the world around us – at least, we should! Because we are God’s chosen people – bought a great price, highly valued, with a future. …because that is already true of us: (NASB95PARA)
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
