Introduction

The second reason that Paul gives thanks to God for his readers is that he knows of their election by God. His knowledge of their election is based on the transformation that took place in their lives
(“knowing your election, brothers [and sisters], beloved by God”) after the statement concerning their “work, labor, and steadfastness”

God chose them

They were loved by God. God sent Paul to them with a vision, . God has loved them before time began. ,
God hand picked them, The word elect or chose (Ekloge) Choice, deliberate, selection, The act of picking out of
The power of the gospel was demonstrated with full conviction. There is always evidence of the Holy Spirit. New creation, regeneration. The process of sanctification begins.

The chosen through scripture

Adam and eve, Noah, The nation of Isreal, Abram, Issac Jacob, Moses, The prophets, Jesus, and the Church
God Chose Abram , His call -17, He Chose Isreal

Deuteronomy 7:6–8 ESV
“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Romans 9:11–13 ESV
though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

The Purpose of Election

God chose a people to enjoy a unique relationship with him which entailed the privilege of belonging to him, sharing in all his inheritance, serving him, praising him and proclaiming him
In Eph 1:4–6 every phrase tells a different phase of the conception: (1) God chose (and foreordained) the saints in Christ before the foundation of the world; (2) according to the good pleasure of His will; (3) unto adoption as sons through Jesus Christ unto Himself; (4) to be holy and without blemish before Him in love; (5) to the praise of the glory of His grace; (6) which He freely bestowed on them in the Beloved. And in Rev 17:14, the triumphant church in heaven is described as “called and chosen and faithful.” God’s sovereign choice governs the experience and testing of the saints at every point from beginning to end

God Has chosen you

God chose you, you didn’t chose Him
There was a boy who did not have much athletic ability. Every time he and his friends would play some game he was always the last to be chosen. One day two new fellows came to play with them and were allowed to be team captains because they were older. The first team captain chose the boy who had always been chosen last before. Why? Because they were brothers, and he loved his brother.
So it is with God. He chose us not because of our abilities, but because he loves us.
John 15:16–17 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
Mark 13:20 ESV
And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days.
Matthew 22:14 ESV
For many are called, but few are chosen.”
No boasting in heaven
1 Corinthians 1:26–31 ESV
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
Only based on his grace alone
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
God owes no one grace at all. He has done no one any injustice
