Luke 19:1–10 NKJV

Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Zacchaeus had problems…

1. He Had A Association Problem 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

We all have the same association! Everyone is a sinner. (NKJV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

2. He had Attitude Problem 2 Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. It is always hard for the rich to get saved because they do not need anything!

(NKJV) 18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 19 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Honor your father and your mother.' " 21 And he said, "All these things I have kept from my youth." 22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. 24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Despite his riches, he was lost and seeking an answer to his problems

(NKJV) 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

3. He had Altitude Problem 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.

He was trying to catch a glimpse of the Savior but could not! He never stopped trying to get a glimpse. To often, we let physical limitation stop us from getting to Christ and serving him!

Just like many today, Zacchaeus had some problems that he needed someone to help him overcome his problem!

1. The Challenge of the Discipleship.

A Prospective of His Deliverance 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house."

A Problems of His Deliverance 7 But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner." (NKJV) 10 As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.

2. The Conviction of the Discipleship

Proclamation of His Deliverance 8 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.

Christ completely changed his life by making a taker, a giver! No one ever had to tell him to give. Giving is just a natural reaction for a Christian!

(NKJV) 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

(NKJV)

26And those who heard it said, "Who then can be saved?" 27 But He said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God."

(NKJV) 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

3. The Change of the Discipleship

A Promise of His Deliverance9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Everyone would say that is was Zacchaeus who was seeking Christ; however, it was Christ who was seeking Zacchaeus! 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

(NKJV) 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

(NKJV)

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
