Leaving a Legacy

Pastor Keith Hassell

 

 

1.       Read “Two Incredible Stories”

2.       What kind of legacy will you leave behind?

a.         A “legacy” is money or property left to someone by a will; bequest; anything handed down from, or as from, an ancestor.

b.         Will you leave behind great riches?  Houses and lands? 

3.       The legacy of a name

a.       The legacy of a name is found in the life behind it.

          1)       A name carries your personal biography

          2)       What makes a good name?

                   a)       Keeping your word even when it costs (Psalm 15)

                   b)      Remaining faithful and dependable

                   c)       Being a giver rather than a taker

                   d)      Living with a respect for others

                   e)       Watching over your lips

                   f)       Seeking to be a blessing

                   g)       Walking in truth rather than telling a lie

                   h)       Walking in a genuine love for others

                   i)        Seeking to serve rather than to be served

b.       A good name is better than great riches

1)       Proverbs 22:1  “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold.”

2)       A good name lasts longer than riches:  “Their name is as good as gold.”

3)       A good name opens doors of opportunity

4)       A good name brings favor from others

          c.       A good name is better than precious ointment

1)       Ecclesiastes 7:1  “A good name is better than precious ointment.”

2)       A name leaves an odor, either good or bad

d.       The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot

1)       Proverbs 10:7 “The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.”

e.       A good name is a covenant name

                   1)       A good name is one that can be trusted

2)       God promised to make Abraham’s name great (Genesis 12:2)

3)       What made Abraham’s name great?  He was a man who walked in covenant with God.

4.       The legacy of your name will determine your success with others

          a.       Your name will open doors of opportunity or close them

          b.       Your name will cause people to follow you or reject you

          c.       Your name will bring either favor or disfavor

5.       The legacy of your name will determine your success in ministry

          a.       Your name will open doors of ministry or close them

          b.       Your name will cause people to search you out or reject you

                   1)       Do people want to serve under you?

                   2)       Would people look to you as a mentor?

                   3)       Would people want to be involved in your cell group?

          c.       Your name will determine your level of authority with God

                   1)       Acts 19:14-17 The seven sons of Sceva

6.       The legacy of your name will be a determining factor in the success of your church

          a.       What do you

7.       The legacy of your name will affect the success of the next generation

          a.       Your children and your children’s children

b.       Proverbs 13:22  “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”

8.       The legacy of your name will determine your success with God (Revelation 3:1-6)
