1. The Sovereignty of the Son of Man

The Accusation vv.23-24
The law had built in allowances for neighbors, the poor and travelers, so the problem was not in gathering food along the way. (ESV) If you go into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.
(ESV)
25 If you go into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.
The Pharisees had added to the law restricting how far a person could travel on the Sabbath.
Their reasoning, (ESV) states, “See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”
They put the limit at 2,000 cubits based on the ark crossing the Jordan River.
29 See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”
This could be added to if a person made a “domicile” by putting food along the way, or according to one source, declaring a tree trunk your temporary home.
This wasn’t even the issue that they raised.
They accused the disciples of reaping! A violation of the law on the Sabbath.
The Analogy
David the future King of Israel -
The Axiom (Principle)
1. The Sabbath was made for man’s need to rest.
It was not that God needed rest. He slumbers not and does not grow weary.
It was that we need rest, but the Pharisees had turned it into a burden.
Jesus is our rest! (ESV) “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
(ESV)
9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
2. The Lord owns it all! God declared it all belongs to him. “ (ESV) Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. 9 I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

2. The Compassion of Christ

Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath and heal?
The Pharisees problem was that they had made the day a source of righteousness, when God had intended it as a time to rest and be refreshed in Him.
Jesus was angry and grieved at the hardness of their heart.
Sudley Church - 1st Bull Run - a hospital for the hurting.
