A man may fancy that he is prospering in business, and yet he may be going back in the world. If he does not face his books or take stock, he may be living in a fool’s paradise, spending largely when on the verge of bankruptcy. Many think well of themselves because they never think seriously. They do not look below the surface, and hence they are deceived by appearances. The most troublesome business to many men is thought. The last thing they will do is to weigh their actions, or test their motives, or ponder their ways, to see whether things are right with them.

Justification is a judicial act of God in which he declares the sinner free from condemnation, and restores him to divine favor

We Cannot Be Justified in Sin—

“We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners”
This has a special reference to the Gentiles being outside the covenant
Acts 15:10 ESV
Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
1 Corinthians 9:21 ESV
To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.
Luke 24:7 ESV
that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
Acts 2:23 ESV
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Each of God’s Laws were surrounded by man’s traditions and people became crippled as they were isolated from God.

We Cannot Be Justified in the Law—

yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the Law
Psalm 143:2 ESV
Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.
We are not justified by legalism
Each of God’s Laws were surrounded by man’s traditions and people became crippled as they were isolated from God.

We Can Be Justified Through the Faith of Jesus Christ—

Justified...through faith of Jesus Christ
Faithfulness of Jesus or the Faith in Jesus or God’s faithfulness revealed in Christ

Paul is contrasting the works of the Old Testament Law with the Faith (system) of Christianity.

The Interpretation of St. Paul’s Epistles to the Galatians, to the Ephesians, and to the Philippians 3. How Paul Corrected Even Peter, and How Peter Accepted This Correction, 2:11–21

He even changes the phrase διὰ πίστεως to ἐκ πίστεως and thus makes it the exact opposite of the repeated phrase ἐξ ἔργων νόμου.

Institutes of the Christian Religion 7. “Dead and Buried”

There follows in the Creed: “He was dead and buried.” bHere again is to be seen how he in every respect took our place to pay the price of our redemption. Death held us captive under its yoke; Christ, in our stead, gave himself over to its power to deliver us from it. So the apostle understands it when he writes: “He tasted death for everyone” [Heb. 2:9 p.]. By dying, he ensured that we would not die, or—which is the same thing—redeemed us to life by his own death.

Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
1 Corinthians 1:30 ESV
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,

We Can Be Justified through Faith—

So we also who have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ

This is the primary truth to be proclaimed by the Christian ministry. It is the foundation stone of all gospel preaching. And yet, somehow or other, such is the hardness of the human heart that it is the most difficult thing to induce our hearers to build on this foundation. Many of them are always trying to lean upon their own works, and so struggling to get back under the old legal dispensation, instead of rejoicing in the liberty of the dispensation of grace

The Interpretation of St. Paul’s Epistles to the Galatians, to the Ephesians, and to the Philippians 3. How Paul Corrected Even Peter, and How Peter Accepted This Correction, 2:11–21

A δίκαιος is “righteous” because God so declares in his judicial verdict. Δικαιοσύνη is the quality of “righteousness” possessed by him whom the heavenly Judge pronounces righteous.

Philippians 3:9 ESV
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
Romans 3:22 ESV
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
Romans 3:30 ESV
since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
Romans 10:12 ESV
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:28

This saving faith is an active faith.

If thou keep these things, and from henceforward speak nothing but truth, thou shalt be able to secure life for thyself. And whosoever shall hear this command, and abstain from falsehood, that most pernicious habit, shall live unto God.’

Faith working through love
Galatians 5:6 ESV
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.
James 2:24 ESV
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
