Doctrines of Grace

These Doctrines of Grace speak to how a person is saved (Soteriology). Sometimes referred to as the “5 Points of Calvinism.” This theology is one that is greatly debated. Some people hold to some of these points of theology yet disagree with other points. Some reject it entirely. I hope that through our discussion you will see that this theology is clearly taught in the bible and that all of these 5 points support one another. You cannot pick and choose. If you reject one you will have to reject others.
The term “5 Points of Calvinism” can be misleading causing the hearer to believe that these “5 points” encompass or define Calvinism. This is not the case. Calvinism represents much more than these “5 points” These “5 points” are a response to 5 articles that Arminius wrote and taught that contradicted the Reformed theology. For this reason many in modern times refer to these as the “Doctrines of Grace” instead of the “5 points of Calvinism.” I like this modern title better. I think it is a more fitting name given that it is a doctrine outlining God’s amazing Grace in the salvation of sinners.
The 5 points of Calvinism are given in an Acrostic - TULIP to help us remember the 5 points.
T - Total Depravity
U - Unconditional Election
L - Limited Atonement
I - Irresistible Grace
P - Perseverance of the Saints
Over the years some have come up with what they think are more clear descriptions of these 5 points but they ruin the acrostic. We will discuss these as we go through these 5 points.
Total Depravity - Radical Depravity - Absolute Inability
The doctrine of Total (or Radical) Depravity is that man is entirely depraved. The effects of sin have corrupted all of every person. It did not just corrupt the flesh but also corrupted our soul. Leaving us in a condition that we are not able to do anything to please God nor anything to save ourselves.
This is the first doctrine listed in the acrostic for good reason. A proper understanding of salvation requires that we see man properly in his fallen condition.
Natural Man is Dead Spiritually
(NASB95)
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
(NASB95)
14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
(NASB95)
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
(NASB95)
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
(NASB95)
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Natural Man cannot do Anything to Please God
(NASB95)
6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
Natural Man Wants Nothing to do with God
(NASB95)
11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;
(NASB95)
19 “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
20 “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
Man cannot Come to God on his own
(NASB95)
44 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
(NASB95)
65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”
This is Difficult for Men to Accept
(NASB95)
66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
Unconditional Election - Sovereign Election - Election
The doctrine of Unconditional (or Sovereign) Election teaches that before creation, God sovereignly elects those that He will save, not based on anything that person does or will do, but purely according to His will and pleasure for His glory.
Limited Atonement - Definite Atonement - Actual Atonement
Irresistible Grace - Irresistible Call - God’s Effectual Call
Perseverance of the Saint - Preserving Grace -
