Noise_pt3(4): The House

1 John 5:14 NIV
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
[LAST WEEK] We pointed out the: WE! US!
[TAKE AWAY] You need others to approach that throne with you! Others to stand with you! Others to encourage you!
Arms linked! Encouraged, empowered, together!
[NOW] in our study of prayer, we will see the landscape this creates.
What does a life of prayer look like?
What do we become, as people of prayer?
[TODAY] I want to talk to you about “the House.”
There is a lot of NOISE regarding “church” and what church is or should be…
[ILLUSTRATION] - Did you ever get an allowance?
My kids ask me for an allowance
“We don’t pay you to participate in this family!”
[PAYOFF] - It’s too easy to lose sight of what the home (family) is about.
What’s in it for me?
As a church, we are a body… we are a family.
That word church gets applied to other things, and dilutes what “church” really is.
House/Church/Temple… There is an interesting moment in Jesus’ life, when he resets what the temple is
In John - Destroy this temple and I will raise it again in 3 days.
House/Church/Temple - This is no longer about a building, but rather a body of people - His Body!
Matthew 21:12–15 NIV
Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. “It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’” The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
Isaiah 5
Isaiah 56:7 NIV
these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
In John - Destroy this temple and I will raise it again in 3 days.
House/Church/Temple - This is no longer about a building, but rather a body of people - His Body!
In Christ, we are the temple; we are the house of God!
Where we go, the temple goes…

Work, grocery store, vacation, etc…

The house

[STORY] Jesus with His Disciples – “Who do you say I am?...”
This is a story of the foundation of the house – understanding what it is built on!
Matthew 16:18–19 NIV
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
This is about awareness – Awareness of disposition. Awareness of POWER – this is prayer!
[PAYOFF] – The church needs a revelation on…
Who Christ is
Who they are in Christ
§ This is a story of the foundation of the house – understanding what it is built on!
The power that exists! – This is prayer!
[TODAY] Let’s declare 3 things about the house of God…
… About US!

A place to connect

1 Peter 2:5 NIV
you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
[PAYOFF] It’s not about how you got here, or even what you do here…
This is your connection point!
Not only are we connected to our Father in Heaven, but to each other…
The house of God isn’t this room; this building… it’s you and I, in and throughout our community!
Not only are we connected to each other, but also we are the connection of the foreigners to the house!

A place to protect

John 15:13 NIV
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
[PAYOFF] Do you have anyone in your life that has your back?
When things get tough…?
When your marriage is hurting…?
When you’re ill, or even worse…?
When you are afraid, when you doubt?
1 John 3:16 NIV
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
Who’s got your back? And, who’s back do you have?
Where else do you get this for your life???
Church/community takes work! It’s difficult at times!

A place to grow

Proverbs 27:17 NIV
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
I’m better here, because of you.

Take Away

Proerbs 27:17
We can see in scripture when the house is flourishing...
Acts 2:42–47 NIV
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
