Big point: We need a redeemer.
What is redemption?
In this context: kinsman redeemer (, )
Deut. 25:5-9--
Deuteronomy 25:5–9 ESV
“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead man shall not be married outside the family to a stranger. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel. And if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’ then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’
If a man dies his closest relative is to buy his property, take his wife in, and if he doesn’t have sons, he is to have sons with his wife.
Or if a man has to sell of his property, he can always buy it back thus redeeming it.
So the basi
A theme throughout the Bible all the way to the very last pages.
God buying back for himself a people.
God redeeming all things even creation!

1. Know Your Need of a Redeemer

Naomi and Ruth certainly knew their need of a redeemer
This story begins tragic and gets worst. They end up needing a financial redeemer, an emotional/psychological redeemer, a relational redeemer, etc.
But I would argue that God allowed the events in their life as a means to bringing them to their need of a redeemer.
They would have stayed and been content.
You cannot redeem someone who doesn’t want to be redeemed, or doesn’t think they need it.

2. Beware of Counterfeit Redeemers

A true redeemer saves us from even counterfeit redeemers
Boaz knew that they needed more than a financial bale out. But he has to follow the rules. So he hatches a plan. He knows that this other redeemer really doesn’t want to pay the real cost of redeeming Naomi and Ruth. He was right …
Ruth 4:5 ESV
Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
He knew he wouldn’t pay the cost.... putting himself in jeopardy
There are countless “redeemers” that offer us a “salvation.
financial, emotional, relational, career, health, etc.
What “redemptions” are you seeking?
Do you know that they will not fully redeem you. They only want to use you.
Trust in a True Redeemer
This is what’s sweet about this story. Boaz is willing to fully and completely redeem Naomi and Ruth.
He is willing to pay the cost
He is willing to receive her forever
He is willing to provide a son — and an inheritance
A true redeemer genuinely redeems our whole person
not just freedom from worldly bondage
not just freedom from guilt and shame
not just freedom from a bad life, sickness, or sadness
Do not receive a “Jesus” that only offers a part way redemption.
Beware of counterfeit redemptions!
Awesome this is, Ruth had a real, complete redeemer!! And so we!!

3. Jesus is Our Ultimate Redeemer

That's what's this story has really been about.
It really hasn't been about Elemilek, or Naomi, or Ruth, or Boaz.
It's all been moving towards one thing. How Obed was born.
Illustration: Paul Harvey-"the rest of the story"]
The author of Ruth has been showing all along that it was in fact God who is the main character... "happened to happen"
God has been orchestrating, leading, guiding, and moving this story along to a conclusion: the birth of Obed, the father of Jessie, the father of David—who is ultimately the great, great … grandfather of Jesus!
And it is Jesus that is the true redeemer.
1 Timothy 2:6 ESV
who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
Romans 3:24 ESV
and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
