The Truth Shall Make You Free!

Foundation Scripture: John 8:31-59
I.
There is a difference between a “believer” and a “disciple”
A. The Jews who believed paid close attention to Jesus’ words without committing themselves to Him
B. A disciple is one who abides in His words

The NIV translates "abide in my word" as "hold to my teaching"
2. The NLT says, "keep obeying my teachings"
3. The CEV says, "keep on obeying what I have said."
4. In other words, abiding in His word includes not only showing interest in God's word but more importantly obeying His word.
Obedience to what we claim to believe is the sure measure of a disciple.
C. Jesus never said that we are to go and make believers.
We are to go and make disciples.
II.
You shall know the truth
A. What is truth?
Many debate it.
Some reject it altogether.
B. There is “truth” with a little “t” and then there is Truth with a capital “T”
1. Natural “truth” may change (for instance, the truth in 1800 was that it was impossible for man to travel in the air.
However, now that is no longer true) but spiritual Truth never changes.
2. Natural truth is called “facts.”
a The fact may be that in 1800 man could not travel in the air.
But the Truth is that it is possible.
b The fact may be that I have sickness in my body, but the Truth is that by His stripes I am healed.
c The fact may be that I am not able to do something but the Truth is that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13)
d The fact may be that I am broke.
But the Truth is that my God will supply all of my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)
C. The Word of God contains God’s unchanging Truth with a capital “T”
D. Ultimately, Truth is a Person—Jesus Christ (John 14:6).
A commitment to “truth” without a commitment to THE TRUTH will only lead to confusion regarding the truth.
III.
The Truth shall set you free
A. Spiritual Truth can set us free from natural truth or facts.
B. It is not truth that will set us free but the truth we /know /that will set us free.
IV.
Freedom is for those who can acknowledge their slavery
A. Political Freedom: The “natural truth” for these Jews was that they felt politically free even though they were still under Roman rule.
1. America is called the land of the “free” and the home of the brave.
We are not in slavery under a dictator.
B. Religious Freedom: The “natural truth” for these Jews was that they considered themselves free based upon their association with their religious roots with Abraham.
1.
We consider ourselves free to pursue whatever faith we choose.
We are not a slave to a religious organization.
C. Spiritual Freedom: Jesus said that whoever sins is a slave of sin.
Jesus came to set us free from our sin.
D. A slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son does.
E. He whom the Son (THE TRUTH) sets free is free indeed.
F. Only when we can acknowledge that we need to be free can we begin to experience the provision of freedom that Christ offers.
V.
Freedom and slavery are evidenced by the control of sin in our lives
A. “You seek to kill me” (v.
37)
B. “My word has no place in you” (v.
37)
C. “You do what you have seen with your father” (v.
38)
D. “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham” (v.
39)
E. “If God were your Father, you would love Me” (v.
42)
F. “Why do you not understand My speech?
Because you are not able to listen to My word.”

43)
G. “Because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me” (v.
45)
H. “You do not hear because you are not of God.” (v.
47)
I. “You have not known Him” (v.

VI.
Will you settle for being a sideline “believer” or will you commit your life to Jesus and become a “disciple”?
A. Will you abide in His word?
B. Will you obey His teachings?
C. Will you follow Him?
D. Will you trade in your natural truth you have been trusting in for the Truth that is eternal?
E. Only those who do can truly be free!
