Introduction

He addressed his letter to Jewish Christians who were dispersed throughout the Roman Empire (). These Christians dealt with difficult situations and they needed help in answering those problems that they faced. They needed wisdom to help themselves maneuver through testing trails.
James wrote this epistle between 40 A.D and 50 A.D. This gives us an idea of what kind of trails those Christians faced during that era. For example, in 40 A.D the Emperor Claudius restricted all Jews from traveling. In 44 A.D, the apostle John’s brother, James, was murdered by Herod (). In 46 A.D, a famine struck Jerusalem which caused a shortage of food. Also in 46 A.D, prejudice conflict rose between Jewish Christians and gentile Christians. So they faced political trails, persecution, internal church conflicts, natural disasters, poverty and anxiety. And the question James asked them is the same question he is asking us today: What do you do when you are facing trails?

The question that James asked them, is the same question he is asking us today: What do you do when you facing trails?
We too faced all kinds of trails. So what do you do? This why James says in verse five, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” ()
We too faced all kinds of trails. So, what do you do? This why James says in verse five, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” ()
Verse five is a conditional sentence assuming that the condition is true. The condition is based on verses three and four. Verses three and four says, “For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” But James knew that we will be lacking in our faith. He knows that we will imperfect and incomplete.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” ()
This is why he said, “If any of you.” If any. This is an inclusive statement. This phase includes all people despite their age, gender and ethnicity. James is speaking to the person who young-minded and inexperience. He is speaking to people who is old in age. He is speaking to the person who needs to practice self-control. He is speaking to everyone.

The Invitation of Wisdom

The word lacks means to have some kind of shortage; to be in need of. Everybody is lacking in some kind of life skill. There is not one person who is perfect and complete. This means that all people are in need of wisdom and or simply lacking wisdom. For example, a person can have self-control in their finances, but lack self-control in eating, time management, consistency and etc. Do you understand how a person can be wise in one area of their life and be unwise in another area of their life? This is why the text says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.”

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” But James knew that we will be lacking in our faith. Read verses three and four. Verse five is a conditional clause that assumes we will lack in fa verses three and four. Take a look at verses three and four. James said, “For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” So the very first words we read in verse five is “if any of you lacks wisdom.” James is saying, “If you are lacking in faith and steadfastness ask for wisdom.” It is wisdom that will help you to be skillful.
For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

The Explanation of Wisdom

Wisdom is not just intellectual knowledge. There are many intelligent people in this world but they still lack wisdom. Some of you may know of Lawrence Krauss. He is a theoretical scientist which means he studies natural phenomenon’s. He can tell you tell you all about the physics of the universe. I suppose he has a high I.Q. If you have a chance to listen to Lawrence Krauss, you will be amazed how intelligent he is, you will also be amazed how dumb he is. You see, Lawrence Krauss is also an atheist. He wrote a book titled: A Universe From Nothing. We know a five-year child can explain that something cannot come from nothing. Zero plus zero is what? Zero. Richard Dawkins and Stephen Hawking are two people who believe that humans evolved from monkeys. Wisdom is having rational thought and it is irrational to believe something comes from nothing.
You can even define wisdom as a way of thinking that carries out the justice of God, the morals of God, the truth of God, the kindness of God, the productivity of God, the innocence of God, the authority of God, the sovereignty of God, the holiness of God. That is to say, wisdom is the by-product of God’s attributes and his laws. If you are an unwise, unfaithful, unrighteous, gluttonous gossiping lawbreaker it is because you fail to understand the holiness of God’s attributes and God’s holy commandments. In many respects, we all fail to understand the holiness of God’s and failing to understand the holiness of God is why we are not always wise people. Wisdom is solely for understanding the nature of God.
How can a person be so smart, but so yet so dumb? Beloved, we shouldn’t be surprise when intelligent people speak so foolishly. Scripture says, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men . . . God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise” (). And One of the most foolish things that a person do is to reject the Lordship of Jesus Christ who died for the sins of the world.
Biblically speaking, wisdom is a way of thinking that carries out the justice of God, the morals of God, the truth of God, the kindness of God, the productivity of God, the innocence of God, the authority of God, the sovereignty of God, the holiness of God. Wisdom is the by-product of God’s attributes and his laws. Failing to understand the holiness of God is why we are are unwise people.
We will continue with our sermon series: Prayer: What Difference Does It Make? Today we will learn the importance
The meaning of my first name means “crossing” or “crossroads.” I don’t embody those definitions. The name Sophia is the Greek pronunciation for the English word wisdom. Many people have named their daughters Sophia. I doubt that many people who are named Sophia embodies’ true wisdom. However, the epitome of wisdom, the personification of wisdom, is the person of Christ Jesus. is a chapter about Lady Wisdom who is calling out to everyone to seek her. In Lady Wisdom says, “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently finds me.” Is this not what Christ have stated of himself? In Jesus said, “He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” Beloved, understanding wisdom is knowing Christ. It is only then Do you understand? The most wisest decision you can ever do is to repent of your sins and believe in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, so that you may be saved.
This is why the text says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.”

The Application of Wisdom

How do we apply wisdom in our lives? First, we must ask God for wisdom. James have written, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.” Here is another way of reading this text: “If any of you lacks wisdom, God commands you to ask Him for wisdom.” Think about this. The questions we have to ask ourselves is: Who are you seeking when you face trails? Who do you turn to when you have marital problems? Is God your financial Counselor? When someone someone scolds you, do you ask God for His guidance? Who is your financial counselors? Our natural default is to depend upon others for wisdom, and not to ask God for insight. I am not saying don’t ask people for advise. However it is unwise to ask ungodly people for advise. It is unwise to seek people who has not clue of the Lord. It is unwise to think that we can handle our own situations. Beloved, we must take into account what Scripture says about seeking our own knowledge and the knowledge of other people. Proverbs 3:5-7 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord. . .”
Applying wisdom is acknowledging the authority of God over our lives. We must first ask Him. We must first seek Him. says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Whenever you do not ask God for wisdom is demonstrates that you do not fear Him nor want to acknowledge Him.

What is wisdom? I define wisdom as is a way of thinking that carries out the justice of God, the morals of God, the truth of God, the kindness of God, the productivity of God, the innocence of God, the authority of God, the sovereignty of God, the holiness of God. Today, we will learn why we should pray for wisdom. Wisdom deals with every aspect of life. Wisdom directly deals with work ethics, matters of the family, culture, war, morals, finances, and God. For example, speaking about finances, if you borrowed money like I have, Scripture says in , “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” Another passage about wisdom dealing with family matters: says, “The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.” If you don’t discipline your children people will look upon you with shame. Do you understand when I say, wisdom deals with every aspect of life?

James wrote this epistle between 40 A.D and 50 A.D. This gives us an idea of what kind of trails those Christians faced during that era. For example, in 40 A.D the Emperor Claudius restricted all Jews from traveling. In 44 A.D, the apostle John’s brother, James, was murdered by Herod (). The Invitation of Wisdom

Verse five is a conditional sentence if the condition is true.

Therefore, he said, “If any of you.” If any. This is an inclusive statement. This phase includes all people despite their age, gender and ethnicity. How do we apply wisdom in our lives? First, we must ask God for wisdom. James have written, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.” Here is another way of reading this text: “If any of you lacks wisdom, God commands you to ask Him for wisdom.” Think about this. The questions we must ask ourselves is: Who are you seeking when you face trails? Who do you turn to when you have marital problems? Is God your financial Counselor? When someone scolds you, do you ask God for His guidance? Who is your financial counselors? Our natural default is to depend upon others for wisdom, and not to ask God for insight. I am not saying don’t ask people for advice. However, it is unwise to ask ungodly people for advice. It is unwise to seek people who has not clue of the Lord. It is unwise to think that we can handle our own situations.
