Get more out of your singing, brings more to your worship

Notes & Transcripts

Make a Joyful Noise . . .

Psalm 100:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: Come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
In NIV v.1 says “shout”
te
HCSB says “shout triumphantly
New heart says “Shout for joy”
Anyway about it you get the idea we are to joyously, jubilantly, rejoicing to lift our voices to the Lord.
Do we want to get more out of the assembly? Get more out of our song service, tonight we are looking at “getting more out of singing” in our getting more series.
Now again look at the verses, (v.2) says serve the Lord with gladness, part of the way we serve is by our praise, our songs that we lift to Him.
Singing is an important part of our assembly, and in this series we are looking at different ways to get more out of the assembly, shhh. I just told you what this series is really all about. We have about 1/3 our our assembly is for singing, so it is not just something that brackets the preaching, it is all part of our worship.
(Slide) Question: Do we need to be in the assembly to worship God? (expand on this)
We could be like David who delighted in singing.
Psalm 63:3–5 NASB95
3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips will praise You. 4 So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. 5 My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth offers praises with joyful lips.
Psm63:3-
Now we have plenty in the N.T. too on how to respond to God’s goodness.
James 5:13 NASB95
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.
So what has happened in the assembly, seems many may have lost the joy of singing.
Colossians 3:16 NASB95
16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
We are commanded to sing with thankful hearts to God. Singing again is not just something we do, it is an important part of our worship. (Insert chapel story on decline in numbers when knew it was a singing chapel)
We are going to be planning an area wide singing event so just consider tonight a warm up for it. So tonight we also will look at the purpose of our singing and how to get more out of our singing.

I. Purpose of Singing

To praise the Lord!
The scriptures we have looked at have already made that clear. Think about the word Hymn
(Slide) Hymn (n) - A religious song or poem, typically of praise to God (Religious song, song of praise, anthem, canticle, chorale, psalm, carol; spiritual)
(Not on slide) Hymn (v) praise or celebrate something
(Slide) in Greek it is “humnos” meaning “A song in praise of”
Praise, praising God should become natural for us as Christians. Just as David responded to God’s blessings
Psalm 28:6–7 NASB95
6 Blessed be the Lord, Because He has heard the voice of my supplication. 7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.
In the prison Paul and Silas sang praise
Acts 16:29 NASB95
29 And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas,
Acts 16:25 NASB95
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
Ac
Singing praise is one of spiritual acts of worship
Hebrews 13:15 NASB95
15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.
As priests, and that is what we are according to
1 Peter 2:5 NASB95
5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
We are spiritual people, offering up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God
Don’t let your singing, your worship of praise become dead, lethargic or profane by not coming from the heart. May you understand that singing is a vital part of your worship, your praise to God. That brings us to our next purpose
T
(Slide) To Teach one another
Colossians 3:16 NASB95
16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
(Slide) To Teach one another
Colossians 3:16 NASB95
16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
(Slide) So we are to teach and admonish one another with? - Psalms, hymns, spiritual songs.
Psalms
(Slide) We teach one another, we admonish one another with ? ? ? - pslams, hymns and spiritual songs, and How are we to do it? singing! Why we are to do it? Because we are thankful, from where are we to do it, from our hearts.
Hymns
(Slide) How are we to do it? - with singing
(Slide) Why are we to do it (implied)? - because we are thankful
Spiritual Songs
(Slide) Where are we to do it from? - from our hearts
(Slide) To whom are we to do it to? - to God
Ephesians 5:19 NASB95
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
(Slide) We are called to make what from where? - from our heart. I know these questions are basic, but we want our singing our praise with our voice from our heart to be basic too, a natural part of our worship, not just in the assembly but in all areas of your life.
When we sing our teaching and admonishing we are teaching each other to live properly. Songs we sing have meanings, there is more than just singing, there is meaning behind the words. (i.e. nothing but the blood)
This brings us to another purpose.
(Slide) To be filled and enriched
Ephesians 5:18 NASB95
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
We are to be filled with the Spirit -singing can help your heart to be full and if your heart is full you are full of the Spirit of God. We just talked about how we are to do it (Eph5:19) - with singing
Colossians 3:16 NASB95
16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
So in Eph5:18-19 singing is a means to be filled with the spirit. now in Col3:16 singing is means of having the word of God enrich you!
Singing is vital, singing is commanded, singing is filling, singing is enriching. So don’t we want more out of our singing? HEre are some ways to get more out of your singing. And I do mean you, its your worship, your praise, your act of spiritual sacrifice to your God, it is personal, we just get to do it together on the first day of the week and it makes it pretty sweet when we do it.
