Introduction: Read
Now the day of Pentecost comes and just as Jesus said would happen the Holy Spirit came and endued the followers of Jesus with power and all the devout Jews who were there became confused because as the followers of Jesus began to speak all the Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Mesopotamians, Judeans, Cappadocians, Asians, Phrygians, Pamphylians, Egyptians, Libyans, Cyrenians, Romans, Cretans, and Arabs heard the message all in their own language. So some were amazed and confused while others mocked saying that they were drunk.
Now, why would they say that they were drunk? This was an attempt to discredit the apostles in the context of Jerusalem at the time. This was the time of the year after the reaping of the barley harvest and before the sowing of the wheat harvest. The time in between these two work periods (barley and wheat harvest) were celebrated with parties and festivals. So, in an effort to discredit the apostles some were saying that they were merely random drunken Jews celebrating the completed barley harvest who happen to be speaking multiple languages perfectly.
Peter, however, calls to everyone’s attention how ludicrous that accusation is. First of all, he says, it is only 9:00 am. Who gets drunk at 9:00 am? Second, he says, what are the chances that drunkenness would fulfill the prophecy of Joel
Acts 2:17–21 NKJV
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved.’
As amazing as it is to watch the speaking in tongues in , we must realize that it is not the speaking in tongues that is the point of . Remember our thesis statement in ? It is the Holy Spirit that enables witnessing so that the church can spread to the ends of the earth. A lot of times we focus our attention in on the speaking in tongues, however, it is not the speaking in tongues that is the focus of the passage. It is the message or the witness that is the point of the passage. Remember, miracles and signs do not save! Belief in the message of the gospel saves! Jesus saves!

The Truth About Ourselves (vv. 23, 36)

Acts 2:23 NKJV
Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
Acts 2:36
Acts 2:36 NKJV
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
Have we killed Jesus?
Romans 3:23 NKJV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
It is a level playing field.
We ought not view the sins of others as an occasion for us to feel better about ourselves.
Romans 1:25 NKJV
who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
We have preferred the creation over the creator.
God is not going to force us to
To reject God in favor of His gifts is an infinite offense.
Example: The teen who says to his/her parents, “I do not love you. I only stay in this house for the _____.”
So the answer is yes. We have played a part in the death of Jesus. It is only due to our sin that Jesus’ death became necessary and God has chosen to justify us through grace by setting forth Christ as the propitiation for our sins.
Romans
Romans 2:24–25 NKJV
For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written. For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
Acts 2:24–25 NKJV
whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
Propitiation: The paying of the penalty that is the result of an offense.
Romans 3:24–25 NKJV
being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
Example: Rachel getting burned
This is an offensive message, but only because of God and his grace is there an alternative to sin and death.

The Alternative

When all those who were there that day heard the message they asked, “Men and bretheren, what shall we do?” Peters response was, “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remissions of sins.”
That day there were Jews from every nation under heaven who heard and believed the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the decision to follow Christ was not one that was taken lightly because we are told that they sold their possessions in order to have all things in common.
Undoubtedly there were also those who rejected the gospel as well.
Acts 2:
Acts 2:43–45 NKJV
Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
They sold their earthly possessions in order to take care of each other as the body of Christ.
Conclusion: Undoubtedly however, there were some there who rejected the gospel as well. Whenever there is an opportunity to believe there is an opportunity to disbelieve. So, I challenge you this morning to examine you heart. As a member of the body of Christ are you committed to being identified with Christ and his body or is coming to church just a part of your weekly schedule.
As far as goes we see the thesis statement of played out in a nutshell. They were empowered and emboldened to witness in order that the nations would come to Christ, even to the ends of the earth.
