The Family Business
What makes for the perfect family?
What makes for the perfect family?
Perfect family: Loving spouse, nice home, white picket fence, dog, etc.
On any given day in my house you will either hear the sounds of my wife singing worship music, laughter from our daughter, nightly prayer, or the Andy Griffith Show.
You would smell home cooking or freshly baked desserts.
These family moments are everything to me.
I am sure some of you had similar experiences.
If you didn’t then you probably decided to look for that.
When I first went to visit my wife’s family we were just dating at the time.
I knew that what I needed was someone who knew how to make family work.
When I met her family I saw just that.
They were timeless, they had a foundation of biblical truths, good values, present parenting, and active citizenship.
Scripture gives us an idea of what family is meant to be...
But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib x he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
Family is supposed to love one another, as God loves us.
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies.
He who loves his wife loves himself.
29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—30 for we are members of his body.
31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
e 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.
33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
h
4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
This guidance is to love like Jesus, love like God.
4 Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Great guidance, but how does God love?
4 Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails.
8 Love never fails.
God is patient, kind, God does not envy or boast, God is not proud.
God does not dishonor, does not self seek.
God is not easily angered, God keeps no record of wrongs.
God does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth.
God always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres.
God never fails.
The New International Version.
(2011).
(1 Co 13:4–8).
Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
We were given our families for the same reason Adam was given Eve.
To honor God, and make him well known in the world.
To care for the world God made.
Family is supposed to help, they are supposed to work together, but work towards what?
Family is supposed to help, they are supposed to work together.
they are supposed to work together.
So What makes for the perfect job?
Perfect job: Great boss, great benefits, Greater salary, pension.
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 Then the LORD God formed a man w from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
We have a God of order, a God of purpose.
He made all creation with an end state in mind.
See we look at the fact that we have to work as the penalty of sin, but working for the Lord isn’t the punishment its the purpose.
The difference between a punishment and a purpose is the heart behind it.
You have to do both don’t you?
But When I make something my purpose I give it my all, I take pride in its result, I feel fulfilled in its achievement.
When I am punished by something I feel contempt, I feel anger, I feel defiant.
My work is less, my quality poorer, my heart just isn’t in it.
We were made for a purpose not a punishment.
The secret to a great job is purpose.
Our purpose is loving God, and as such we were made for stewardship.
I know Phil has already told you the definition of stewardship, but just in case you missed it, Stewardship is the honorable position of caring for someone’s finest things.
This is the Aunt Bee to Opie Taylor, the Alfred to Bruce Wayne’s Mansion and Bat Cave!
What is notable is these people have a position of responsibility, respect, and value.
We are Stewards to God’s kingdom.
That is a fortune friends.
9 I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,
10 for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
We work so that we can honor God with our work.
